So basically, something that should've been there from the beginning is finally being added.

Like copy + paste or multitasking for the iPhone. :)

They do things well, but they sure are slow.

Well... even though it's cool that they are adding this to the app, I really think that if I am ordering something as expensive and as detailed as a built to order Mac, I will take the time to do it from a web browser on a computer.

Yea same here... unless it was like something Like a new iPhone or iPad and I wanted to preorder as soon as possible

Got that right, but I'm glad, that's what sets em apart from all the other companies

Yes, as in, the iPad.

I do online shopping and major transactions on my iPhone, never mind something as big and comfortable as the iPad. You should have no problems at all.

But you can't tell me that in an app or anything else on an iOS, that you have never accidentally swiped across one of those rolling selection menus or clicked a different check box with your finger on accident. When making a major purchase like a Mac, that mistake could be several hundred dollars worth.

Hard for me to get excited about this. It is something they should have done on their website years ago. What I find ironic is this is the type of app that Apple always seems to be against because it just duplicated what could/should be done from a website.

This, as well as for me, I have never done BTO from Apple for one fatal reason: I don't want it shipped, I want to pick it up. I want them to do BTOs locally. The BTO "options" are laughable and there's no excuse for not having the ability to customize and then pick them up on demand from my local Apple Store. That way, I can ensure everything is right before I leave the store, and if it's not, force them to fix it right then and there.

I could see if you could opt for optical or no, any processor on any MacBook Pro model, any hard drive or solid state on any MacBook Pro model, matte screen on any MacBook Pro model, different keyboard colors/styles, different body colors, etc. But they aren't. 99% of the options could be done at local Apple stores by the guys in the back.

Also, both the web AND this app miss one critical feature that IMO makes me hate shopping from Apple: you can't check store availability of stocked models, which is a critical issue for me. Who cares about BTO from the phone? The idea is to have a quick easy way to shop for a device, and availability seems a no-brainer.

I don't understand the need for an app. I think making the website 3.5" and 10" touch screen friendly would be better.

Considering the way webpages are a cluster F of banner ads all over the top side, and even in the middle of the content, an APP provides bar none a better user readability experience IMO.

An example, I no longer visit the websites of the WP, NYT, USAToday, etc but instead use their Apps because the organization and readability of the articles is far superior on the iPad in the APP format then the web format. I feel like Im reading an article or paper or book, not a web page or web site.

The other advantage of Apps is that they are far superior for teaching those people who aren't web savy, like older people. Many older people fear the web, but when you just show them 'Hey, push this icon for your USA today paper', they understand that and can pick up how to read articles very fast on the iPad. Not so much using the web browser on it and having to explain what to click, what to type in, etc.

looking at it. Really no change the "Customizing" the computer is more or less the same way it was in the past. You are required to buy some expensive upgrades to get some of the more basic ones most people go after.

Sounds impressive.
Hopefully there will be an affordable tower model available soon.

Supposed to be coming ...for affordable...we'll find out.

It's always irked me that many of us mid-high level users that do graphics and 3d and editing cant buy anything that is upgradable other then the Mac Pro which is very pricey and a lot of the specs arent needed.

The top of the line iMac is a great machine, but I have a monitor already and I want to be able to upgrade my graphics card every few years and you just can't do that.

I'd love a Mac Pro with and SSD slot and 1 drive slot since 1 slot is really all I need since I can store on externals for projects, 1 or none optical drives, and maybe 4 RAM slots vs 8 but with the ability to get the same processor in the smaller form factor.

Apple needs to realize that there are Pro users that want the power of the top of the line iMac but in a small form factor case with no monitor and upgradable parts.

Except the website for the App in question, has no ads, no clutter, and has more functionality than the App does at this point. I agree with what you've said though.

It's a shame there aren't more customizable options available to select in the first place. Where's the matte screen option for iMacs, for example? All I see are overpriced options for ram and hard drives ($150 more for a 2TB drive? A 3TB internal drive is only around $100 to begin with!). I see a matte option for the MBP but it's $150 more (used to be the same as a glossy once upon a time). It's that ridiculous markup that will drive me to keep buying Hackintoshes instead of Macintoshes. Charge more for OSX if you want, but stop ripping people off with off-the-shelf equipment Apple.... Geeze.

So don't swipe around then. Make sure before confirming. If i'm not mistaken that is called common sense.

Apple could make a killing and really pull over a lot of PC users who want a desktop if they offered a midrange tower. Nothing Pro.

It could be called the "Mac" ;)

That's fantastic. I tried to order a laptop on my iPhone. It was an exercise in pain and futility. A proper keyboard, high-resolution screen, and precise pointing device are invaluable for this.

Let's bring back custom colors. Better have images that we upload, silk-screened on the custom Mac!

I can only imagine people saying "HEY THIS PICTURE LOOKS NICE ON MY PC SCREEN", then having it be scaled and printed onto the MacBook looking like crap.

Donnt worry your not missing out on much :p

Agreed. The Apple Store app was very lacking. It should have been this way from the get-go. Especially since their main website is so iPhone unfriendly (at least for me). Wouldn't you think Apple would make a website and app that worked seamlessly with an iPhone? Perhaps now they will. Just a few years late...

Having all of the information onboard probably eliminates any lag in having to re-download the webpages tens of thousands of times...That, and there are some functions unique to the store that are not on the website (e.g. Have a specialist come over and help me).

That, and if it's only running this one app, there's no need to run Safari, with bookmarks, the matrix of open pages, etc.
