Can confirm this works on first gen iPad and iPhone 4... Not that I can see much changed so far...

I've been getting anxious using my 3gs in the face of the 4s...a jump to 5 sure would be nice...

why would there be code for the next iPhone?
in iOS 5.1?
i would think it would only show up towards the end of the iOS 5, just before iOS6 betas

It's there so that websites like macrumors.com have something to write about and thus create some cheap marketing and hype for Apple.

It's a bit like "hidden features" and "easter eggs" in other software products - someone will find them and talk about it and that is much cheaper than running expensive media campaigns.

But there is also a much simpler reason: Somebody at Apple has to test beta software with prototype hardware. Now how would that somebody go about it if the software would not recognize the hardware?

X2..hell no. 4" is plenty big enough. Any bigger and you need cargo pockets to carry it...or a backpack. These gigantic phones with 4.5"+ screens are ridiculous. Why not just add cellular capabilities to an iPad and whip that bad boy out and hold it up to your head?

oh come on we all know its coming a new phone but prob in 12 months so whats the hurry !

Exactly.
Apple have never released a new iPhone without a new iOS. Software is the phone, not hardware.

When iOS6 beta is released we know that its 3-4 month to iPhone release. (Since Apple beta tests its OS unlike other mobile phone OS makers)

Aha! The iPhone 5 lives!

Looks like there's a chance it might be named iPhone 5 after all.

Many wants smaller screens (especially women). The Sony Ericsson Mini Experia is a hit.

What happened to the rumored iPhone Nana? Or did Steve kill that project? "people have to file down their fingers to type on it".

I would love a 4 inch iPhone and a smaller/cheaper Cloud iPhone.

Argh.

For the idiots wanting a 5" screen, take your asses over to the impractical world of Android.

The sooner the better. After Apple mucked up the 4 & 4S, I don't give a flip what they call it just get it done.

I should have never sold my 3GS, that was a far better phone.

Apple doesn't care, but if they did they'd be embarrassed with Antennagate, followed by batterygate. Two phones in a row with a laundry list of problems.

Someone is clueless & out of touch.

And Android devices aren't marred with the same problems ? Tell that to my flagship Galaxy Nexus, just don't call me on it as I currently won't be able to hear you.... Or text me as it often crashes out of the messaging app....

It's going to have a 4" screen per the media I have read about over the past week or two.

If I was a developer at Apple, regardless if the company was working on a next gen device, I'd insert this line in my code just to have fun reading rumors sites :p

I'm also wondering about this. I've never seen iPhone4,2 referenced before, and can't find any released firmware for it. Anyone got any ideas?

ZOMG. Apple is going to release a new version of its most popular tablet?????? Who would have thought this would EVER happen!!! I cant believe you sleuths discovered this incredible nugget by analyzing code. The entire world had assumed that iPad 2 was going to be the final version. This changes everything. Again. Stop the press.
