what if you travel and go to an are with less congested towers. Are you still throttled? AT&T still feeding us the BS. There would be less uproar if they throttled at 3gigs. They are not worried about congestion if they are offering data plans higher than the ceiling of the throttling point. AND if they are actually worried about congestion, then the people on the 5gig plan are getting screwed. I have not been throttled, but if i'm traveling and lose my way and need internet to find me way around and get throttled i am going to be pissed.

This isn't about congestion. It's about getting people to switch off of the old unlimited plans. It's like the theory that a casino has to have enough cash on hand for every chip on the floor. AT&T should be able to handle as much as data as they sell. So if they have 100 customers on the 3GB plan they should be able to handle it if those people collectively use 300GB in a month. I have nothing to back this up, but I tend to believe that the total of underused data is more than the total of data over 2GB used by people on unlimited plans.

Because the iPad is still only a rumor until announced by Apple.

As for the bandwidth issues, I'm going to re-Match my phone daily to use my "unlimited" quota. ;)

That's understandable, but at the end of the day this is a Rumor forum. I know it's for apple related news aswell, but AT&T is just a side issue. Especially as the rest of the world use other carriers.

Ive noticed comments like these on a good deal of posts. Is there really anything productive about such minor complaining?

AT&T articles quite clearly related to a large majority of iPhone users. it's pretty easy to make the jump and say its apple related.

And the title of the site isn't legally binding. And not all articles are going to be of interest to everyone

She doesn't use her work internet, so everything she views is through the phone.

Her boss must be awfully happy about the fact that she spends that much time browsing. Since it's no audio and no video, the number of pages she views must be in the thousands per month. Maybe her boss should send ATT a thank you note?

I pay for unlimited data and I believe have only gone over 2 GB once, but with iCloud and iTunes Match, I consistently come close and have to curb my usage. I do not hog the service, nor do I do anything with my connection that isn't above-board.

The only thing I get from this latest update is that AT&T's tactics are capricious and unpredictable.

My wife just got this text the other day. She's barely over 2GB and doesn't stream any audio or video.

Friggin' ridiculous.

i agree it's ridiculous, but how does someone get to 2 gb on an iphone without streaming audio or video?

Work. I'm at 1.75 gb with five days left. No streaming

After reading the replies to this post, how can some people not care if they're being throttled or not or even go as far as being an AT&T apologist? AT&T is obviously screwing its customers and so many don't seem to care.

It's because the people complaining about being throttled have a very clear and obvious way to fix their problem, AND get more for the same cost, and yet they don't do it. So I relish seeing idiots act stupidly, at least as long as it doesn't hurt me. Same reason I watch judge judy :)

I bet the whiners on this thread watch judge judy and find themselves rooting for the idiot who bought a used car for $300 without a contract and is upset when it needed a new axle in 6 months.

I for one love to hear people unwilling to help themselves. It's hilarious!

Yes, and the electric company should be able to handle everyone turning on all appliances. And the bank should be able to handle everyone withdrawing 25% of their own cash. And the roads should be able to handle everyone in a neighborhood leaving at once. And a pool should have enough reclining chairs for everyone in the neighborhood.

Are you truly this unaware of how public resources work? Get your head out of your netflix stream for 5 minutes a day, PLEASE!

As mentioned earlier, the thing that bothers me most is I dont know HOW to manage my data. If the cutoff is 2gb, okay fine. I will monitor myself so that I dont run past that, or at least, I know where I stand. Last month I got throttled at around 4GB, so therefore, this month I will try to use less than 4GB. But what if they throttle at 2gb, and I am half way through the month and they throttle me? I believe the speeds they offer while throttled are unusable and dont want to spend 5 minutes looking up directions because the maps app is so damn slow.

Dear AT&T, although I dont like throttling, because I pay for "unlimited", I can understand if you do throttle. But please make the speeds like .5mbps rather than the .10 they are now.

Everytime I got the text saying I'm in the top 5%, I got throttled to 0.10 Mbps speeds. AT&T is bsing this crap.

You mean paying the same amount for less data? Your tone is insulting and you obviously haven't thought this through. I signed a contract to pay $30 for an unlimited amount of data each month. Now they have changed the rules and are telling me that I have to still pay $30 but I can only use 30GB before I will get charged again, or if I stay with my unlimited plan they will throttle me. So am I not helping myself by not bending over and taking it from AT&T?

And I don't watch Judge Judy because I have better things to do with my time. Judge Judy is a show watched by tools.

Yeah, I've thought it through. I love seeing these pathetic whiners moan and groan when the solution is right there in front of them. ATT has made it abundantly clear that "unlimited" will never again get more than those on a tiered plan. Yet some people are so dumb that they continue to hope. Hilarious!

I'm gonna respond to you only because I forgot to type two words: in theory. What I meant to say was IN THEORY AT&T should be able to handle....Thank you, but I am well aware that AT&T probably couldn't handle everyone in the country firing up YouTube at the same time. And everyone in the casino won't win at the same time either.
For the record, I don't stream anything on my phone and the highest data total I ever had was around 1.5GB. Also, for the record, AT&T is not a public resource. It is a "resource" funded by paying customers who have a reasonable expectation to get the full functionality of what they pay for. If AT&T wants to offer incentives or some way to entice people who have grandfathered unlimited plans to switch to a tiered plan they they should do that. Once again, I bet there are more people who use less than they pay for than there are people in the so-called top 5%.
Nobody could have known the way smart phones would explode in popularity so offering unlimited data years ago probably didn't seem like a big deal. But the fact is they did offer it and people have contracts for it. AT&T should come up with a better way to entice people out of these deals, not screw them over.

I'd actually like to switch from unlimited to a plan with tethering, but I am not going to spend $50/month to do it. I have used less than 3GB every month except two.

This is exactly right. ATT could largely solve this problem of getting people weened off of UDP's if they just made tethering reasonable. I would gladly give mine up for something in the neighborhood of 2-3 GB @ $30 incl' tethering. I dont have any scientific evidence to back me up but I would venture to guess somewhere north of 50% would convert. There was a recent story on MR that VZW has something in the works so that should force ATT's hand to follow suit.

So again AT&T is proven to be awesome.

Anyone unhappy about the unlimited plan is free to switch to a normal plan.

"will only reduce speeds for the top 5 percent of users in areas where network capacity or spectrum is insufficient"

Obviously then the solution then is to increase the network capacity or spectrum, no? AT&T is making good money from data without spending enough to provide it.

Well, I'm glad you don't mind getting screwed by powerful organizations. Maybe we would all be happier if we just let everyone who wanted to take advantage of us do it. I'm not so sure I would be so proud to just grab my ankles and point fingers at people that resisted.

I constantly use 3-4GB a month and have occasionally hit 5GB. I got my first throttle warning in January after calling in to customer care when I was getting no data at all. I got my second warning and then a few days later was throttled this month after texting *DATA# to check my usage.

In both case, I received the 5% warning literally minutes after interacting with AT&T in some way. The months before that I had never called customer care or done the *DATA# check and was never warned.

Case by case basis is total bs. So they will punish those who are in areas with substandard AT&T infrastructure. My 3G is so horrible by early afternoon that today I decided to switch to EDGE and it actually FASTER and more reliable....go figure. I'm on edge right now as a write. I couldn't even login to macrumors on 3G. So my point is...AT&T UPGRADE YOUR &@!$&@$ INFRASTRUCTURE AND STOP SCREWING OVER YOUR CUSTOMERS!!!

Like they care...I pray for bankruptcy in your future.

[...]"The New York Times reports that AT&T only throttles these customers when they reside in areas with shortages of network capacity."[...]

:mad: So this means if you live in an Area like NY or SF which is known for it's shortage of network capacity that ATT is going to lower your Datarate so it is unusable. But it still asks you to pay more than the 3GB Plan. This is complete BS, ATT should tell the unlimited users the truth and not lie, they do not have an unlimited plan for grandfathered in users and that is it. Or in short: ATT gives a $&!* about it's loyal customers that didn't move over to Verizon or Sprint. I am certainly going to consider moving. :mad::mad::mad::mad:

I missed the good old days (circa 2004) when phone carriers were actively trying to lower price and/or offer more for your money. Every year, each carrier rolled out more fantastic plan than the year before. Since then, phone carriers have NEVER tried to offer more for same or less.

It's fine that you love and defend a greedy corporation like AT&T that screws its customers, you're free to do just that.

Can you please enlighten us with your (probably not so) simple solution?

I agree 100% with the statement in bold in response to cameronjpu.

I think you're missing something when you say case by case, some quotation marks. "Case by case" is more like it as AT&T has no clear way of informing its customers about the throttling issue.

Bankruptcy is too light a sentence for AT&T, a breakup would be a better way of handling the company.
