Japanese blog Mac Otakara today offers a brief report claiming that Apple is working on a new product for release in 2013 that will carry a 5-inch Retina-quality display.
The product which has 5-inch Retina Display is expected to be released in 2013, and resolution of this LCD will be 1,600 x 960 pixel (800 x 480 by legacy majour) or 1,280 x 960 pixel (640 x 480).
Apple has been rumored to be developing a so-called "iPad mini" carrying a 7.85-inch display carrying the same 1024x768 non-Retina resolution of the original iPad and iPad 2. Despite the smaller physical size of the iPad mini compared to the iPad, calculations suggest that the screen size would meet Apple's app design guidelines to keep interface elements of existing iPad applications at an acceptable physical size from a usability perspective.

A device carrying a 5-inch display at either 1600x960 or 1280x960 would introduce additional complications for developers, presuming that it would be an iOS device designed to run App Store apps. That resolution would not allow for easy scaling of existing iPhone/iPod touch or iPad apps to fit the new device's display, requiring developers to target yet another set of screen dimensions with their apps.

Mac Otakara has had a mixed track record in the past, and when combined the apparent difficulties for app developers, we hesitate to put much faith in these claims at this time.

IF this rumor is true it is the remote for Apple TV +.

The mid sized iPad is probably the K-6 ed model. Might even be wifi only or most sales to wifi markets.

The oddball dimensions might be 16:9 for video previews and simply display traditional apps in a frame.

I agree. Posts like the OP don't seem to get this fundamental fact: A multitouch device is defined by its size. The iPod touch is an iPod. It is not a small iPad. The iPad is an iPad. It is not a big iPod touch. A device of intermediate size would be a completely different device with a different target function. Because they all run iOS means that they can share many of the same apps. Sharing apps, however, does not change the fact that they are different devices.

why

Nope, it's the iPhone 5....:D

Why do people keep calling it the iPhone 5 when it's going to be the 6th generation iPhone. It will either be the iPhone 6, iPhone LTE, iPhone 4G, or something like that. iPhone 5 would mean it's the 5th iPhone they ever made, which isn't true.

1280x960? Yeah... the only way I could see them supporting that resolution is if they wanted to run two iPhone apps side by side (in which case it would be perfect ).

The next iPhone will be called "iPhone", like they did with "iPad". :)

oh man

Please God don't turn into Android!!! I love Apple simplicity and the fact that there's not 500 devices floating around. Please oh please let this be something new or just a rumor, but not another "version".
