Old Carbon program question

I have an old prototype game written in Carbon / C++ for Mac. I'd like to update the ancient graphics in time for a show, coming very soon. This is no time to learn Cocoa.

Question: In the Carbon world, what is the best way to import a file of bitmaps that I drew in some bitmap-editor and draw pieces of it onto my screen? What is the best file format to use for this purpose?

Thanks, Robvas! That didn't directly answer the question but it will answer many others; I'm exceedingly glad to have that reference.

Meanwhile, I found some old tools for loading and using JPEG images; they will do the trick.
