Gift this one to my little sister and purchase the new one, assuming it doesn't get any bigger or heavier that is.

Not at all.... I'll have this until at last 2014, at which point I may give it to my mother....

LOL, I am still using my iTouch 2 on a daily basis.... tho the battery is nearly unable to hold a charge.
 
1000% agree that the components for the retina is just not ready yet... 4S with LTE anyone?
 
ipad 3 is thicker than ipad 2... so im guessing retina mini 2 will be slightly fatter. LOL
