Schmidt was an Apple board member prior to the iphone launch, thus having inside knowledge of Apple's UI paradigm (in fact of Apple's entire paradigm, as a company) and of all the inovations they were planning to bring to market, prior to that happening. This fact makes it more like stealing inside information to gain an actual advantage over the competition (not so much Apple, but mostly all the other companies that were, or would inevitably be, planning to bring something similar to the market)...
I always favor copying an entire paradigm and its inovations when it means creating fair competition... ideas shouldn't belong to anyone, nor to any company, but only provided that you copy and re-use them AFTER the inicial solution comes to market, and not by using privileged inside knowledge that should never be used that way in a fair trade environment.

What inside information are you speaking of ? Again folks : No one ever accused Eric Schmidt of using his position on the board to gain information to pass along to his people at Google.

No one but a bunch of Internet forum goers with more Google hate than reason.

Android finally launched at the end of 2008. The iPhone was demoed in January 2007. If Android really take UI paradigms from the iPhone, Eric Schmidt being on the board of Apple didn't really help it. Andy Rubin would've had like 15 months playing around with an original iPhone and then an iPhone 3G to do so.

But Android's UI is soooooo different from the iPhone, you can plainly see that they didn't do that.

Android was under development before and after that point. This was from Engadget a couple years ago.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has resigned from Apple's board today citing a conflict of interest. Apple (Steve Jobs, in fact) says that "Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple's core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric's effectiveness as an Apple board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest."

You can argue over the real situation there, but both sides presented it this way.

No one is saying Apple is a copier. People saying Google is a copier obviously don't understand the IP at issue here nor the actual claims in the cases. They just go for the easy "media friendly" material Apple gives, the "smear campaign".
