After three iMacs in a row, with the last being a 2010 27 incher, I decided to jump ship and go with the 2012 mini with an ATD. In the end, it seems like a less expensive upgrade path since I can buy a new mini for a lot less than a new iMac down the road. Also, I really wanted to add an SSD to my 2010 iMac, but after going through the adventure of opening up a previous model, I didn't want to try it again. OTOH, I was able to open up the mini with far less struggle.

I don't think we'll ever see a consumer-level MacPro-type that's easy to upgrade. Looks like the mini is the best we're getting in that regard :(

Because my 2009 27" iMac is just fine. It does the job; web browsing, emails, downloading.

I want to upgrade from my 2008 iMac very bad and am extremely excited by the new iMac lineup but part of me would wait even if I had the cash for the following reasons:

How will this new ultra-thin, minimal-ly ventilated design hold up to heat in the long run?

Will Fusion Drive be a stock configuration in the next revision (I bet so..)?

While sleek in design, lacks to many features. a 256mb SSD option would have been nice, leaving the optical drive also helpful. I feel that keeping an external drive in my drawer defeats the purpose of an All-in-One.

No DVD, the 21 inch is not user upgradable and even if I could afford it, it is not available.
