I can agree with this. in my Scion tC with a 5spd manual, I can get around 45MPG if i'm driving between 40-45 in 5th gear. At 55, it's around 33MPG, 65 it's 29, 75 it's 27, 85 it's 25, and 95 it's 23. This is all according to the instantaneous MPG readout in the dash. The engine is an inline 4 cylinder that is also found in the Camry.
The local speed limit here is 75MPH on the highway. This 30 miles outside of Denver. Just yesterday I was driving back from a doctor's appointment, and the fast lane was averaging about 92. Because of this I usually tend to drive on the fast side. Now, my car is the perfect example of mileage lost at higher speeds. It really doesn't have an overdrive gear, and in 5th, I sit at around 4k RPM at 80MPH. If i drive 60 on the highway to work, (44 miles) I usually tend to average around 520 miles to a tank of gas. If I drive 80, I'm usually right around 420.
In regards to the F150 that's rated for 18mpg, you CAN do better. I have a GMC Yukon Denali for winter driving. It's rated for 13 city and 17 highway. If I drive 60, I can easily average 20-22. If you have an extra 5 mins to get to work, slow down a bit, and see if it makes a difference.

Polo's are great cars for what they are. It's only a 1.2 but its pretty nippy.

Thanks, yeah I went with the 2.5 since the TDI has known issues with the fuel pump failing as well as a bad, bad intercooler design problem that allows condensation to get into the engine and destroy it...decided not to take that gamble and go with the cheap and trusty five banger
