I bet if it breaks then Microsoft will find some way to repair it. They probably _know_ how to repair it.

How sad....
The Microsoft Product Manager for the Surface Pro must be crying to see his one sale torn apart!

Wow, they could sublet some of that unused PCB real estate.

Damn, and here I was about to buy one. /sarcasm
Still, as fun as it is to rag on Microsoft, nothing (and I mean NOTHING) is worse than the 1/10 repairability score of the Macbook Retina. Irreparable tablets? Fine. Irreparable laptops? No bueno. |

One of the key points to remember about this story is the difference between "repairability" and "upgradeability."
Both the iPad and Surface tablets are difficult to repair on your own. However, you could argue the Surface should score higher because of it's IO ports: SD card slot, USB 3 port, and display port. I don't care for the Surface, but there are times I wish I had an SD card slot in my iPad. (The SD 'photo' adapter doesn't count if I want to use actually storage like I would on a normal computer.) |

According to iFixit, it is exactly 1 point easier.

Looks unsurprisingly cramped. Waiting for 256gb SSD and 7 hours battery. Interesting to see if they can pull this off (even with Haswell).
And I've gotten over the fact you can crawl inside small devices and upgrade them yourself. It pissess me off off to no end but can't do anything about it other than pay the extortion fees on purchase.

These days all laptops, all in ones and tablets will be next to impossible to fix yourself. To make them smaller, glue has to be used.
It's really not an issue for 99% of people though.

I doubt it. Both companies are held to a different standard these days. That is, people have unrealistically high expectations for Apple and people treat Microsoft as the crazy uncle. |

"Microsoft spared no expense when it came to keeping the Surface Pro going. They sourced the Cadillac of batteries from LG: an Escalade 42 Wh unit. The battery is rated for 7.4 V and 5676 mAh. Impressive specs? Note that the iPad 4 has a 43 Wh battery, albeit at 3.7 V. Even with all this battery juice, the reported battery life of the Surface Pro is less than 5 hours. "
I don't care either way (I don't have / want an iPad nor a Surface Pro), but getting 5h with a way more power-hungry system and the same battery energy capacity is actually not bad... |

Microsoft Surface
I understand that the Surface is sort of an answer to iPad, but this is Macrumors, (which I think should be renamed Applerumors, considering the large quantity of NON MAC content on here), so why are we reporting stuff regarding Microsoft , is there really no other news from Apple or products intended for the Mac or i devices that we can report on instead??

I agree. Going forward, I think we'll have devices that don't even have a repairability score because so much of the components will be integrated. Imagine the day where the entire motherboard is the size of a CPU dye and the battery is the size of a small coin. I think it's crazy knowing that the power in my iPhone 5 once occupied five floors of a building. Imagine how many of today's iPhones will fit in devices 15 years from now. |

Typical apple screwing the end user making devices so hard to fix so I can't upgrade the ram in my iPad.
Oh....wait....MS Surface Pro? errrrr.....iOS blows!

Don't take a ton of stock in this article when the writer does not even know that the "black goo" is Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) Sealant. It is a very commonly used sealant in micro-electronics.

I hate that every manufacturer glue everything these days. Keep glue away from my components. Theres nothing a good double sided tape or a few screws can't do.
