Pat down 1: Keys
Pat down 2: Wallet
Pat down 3: Phone

Check.

I do all these everytime I'm moving from one point to another. :D

Check.

Then a backwards glance leaving any spot I've been in for a while (check-in counter, ticket machine, vending machine, ATM, seat, cash register line, etc., etc.)

... owners of lost phones, cameras, iPod or even Zunes would go to one website...

Which reminds me of this website I found when we had a similar "lost on a plane" thread a month or so ago.

For those who don't know, 3-pat down for men is:

Pat down 1: Keys
Pat down 2: Wallet
Pat down 3: Phone

The order doesn't really matter as long as all of the above are met.

No one told me of this but somehow started doing this when I was very young - now it's a habit. If I do not feel my phone in my pocket everytime I sit down or stand up, I know something is wrong and I need to find it and put it back in the pocket. Same applies to keys and wallet…

Me too

Lesson to learn

Lets not make assumptions about others' good intentions and advice.

My mother always completes a full power-down on her iPad prior to a flight. I am always telling her to use Airplane mode.

From today, that advice changes.

Based on the earlier suggestions, do not use Airplane mode, but to clarify - switch it off completely instead.

Advantages:
1. Saves battery for when you need it at the other end (after unexpected delays?)
2. When switched on by the finder, 'Find iPhone' will work.
3. Doesn't interfere with aircraft avionics.

Disadvantages:
1. Nothing to play with...

...but if you tend to use the device all flight, you are probably not the type to leave it behind?

I am a seasoned traveller and yet, once I left the darned phone in the front pocket! Fortunately I discovered quick enough and the plane hasn't left.

Another thing traveling with families: I thought you had it. No, I thought YOU had it!

I made the same mistake last year coming back from Chicago to Houston. It was a United flight and I left my iPad in the pocket of the seat in front of me. I filed a lost report and a month later received a email that they found it. Had to drive 30 minutes to their office near the airport to get it, but I'm glad I actually got it back.

If you think you know more than everyone else and that I should teach my eleven year old daughter to ignore authority anytime she disagrees with then then yeah, it's for you.

The point if the tread was to see if:

A. There was anything else I could do at this point.
B. Is anyone had any experience getting things back from this process

It was not to argue the policies of administrative agencies.

Thanks for those who are helpful.

Then why are you arguing with members who are suggesting not using airplane mode, which can be as simple as turning off your iPhone for the duration of the flight (easy to do as it's not of much use without reception/wifi)?

We've given you plenty of advice like going ahead and to file a claim with Amex, as there's not much else you can do. You're lucky that you're still within the 90 day period. No need to argue further as you already know what to do.

A. You can do nothing but wait, in case it turns up in Find my iPhone.
B. I lost my phone and never got it back.

I always do a "stupid check" when I leave my house for a trip, exit trip transportation, and later when I leave the hotel to go home to make sure that I have everything. Kind of like "what would be stupid to leave behind" :D

Good luck with your search!

Due to security concern I have disabled Control Centre at lock screen because anybody can quickly swipe and put in Airplane mode then all the remote checks are useless ...

As a caveat ... any good samaritan cant even swipe to put it back into normal mode so atleast if its lost I can call it ... LoL

robertpetry, you are a class act.

And I mean that as a compliment.

Thanks. I was trying to ignore the comments.

No luck yet at airport lost and found or with the airline. I just don't see how someone could find it and not turn it in. Hopefully it is in transit to Dallas. If not, well I just don't understand people sometimes.

I'll post back if I hear anything. If not I will probably be looking for a used 4s to replace her 5. Tough lesson for everyone.

A friend of mine left his iPhone in a cab in manhattan once. Three hours later someone called my phone from his (I had called his phone and texted and left messages in case found) , so anything is possible.

The locked screen can be a deterrent for people that find them and want to return it, 10 try's and the phone is erased, I believe. But texting may bypass that (at least for a ph number on the screen).

Good luck.

I work in the airport. nothing new. I see people leave their phones charging or even their wallets in the seats all the time.

2 months ago I almost lost my iPhone 5 because the TSA. while I was going through TSA security checkpoint they decided to take my bag and sweater out of the bin. And since I didn't put my iPhone 5 inside my bag but in the bin a stupid TSA officers decided for some reason it was ok to remove my bag out of the bin without properly checking to see if there was anything else in the bin before giving it to someone else. Then when I was in the other side of the checkpoint waiting for my bag and sweater to come out of the x-ray machine to my surprise my bag and sweater came out without the bin. I begin to tell the TSA officers where's the bin with my iPhone 5. And after 45 minutes of the TSA officers looking for my iPhone they told me to return after work to see of they found it. I tried calling it but no one answered. A hour afterwards I decided to use my co-workers phone and tried my luck and see if someone would answer. A TSA officer picked up and it turned out someone took my iPhone 5 by mistake and later realized it was not theirs. They gave it to a TSA officer and told me to pick it up. So u rushed to get it

Needless to say. Who hires the majority of these dumb TSA officers? Something I will never understand.

I really hope that's how it actually happened. A friend of mine was leaving Vegas a few years back and had his iPad stolen from the car he was getting in while loading luggage. He didn't have time to try to find it since he'd miss his flight but he was able to track it down to a Casino down the road. He could see it moving around the area so he called them up. They denied it was even there until he told them it was moving. Turns out a Security Guard had it for a couple of days and was turning it in. He got it back completely physically wiped clean of any fingerprints.

That sucks.

My wife literally tries to throw her iPhone 5 away.

It's dropped out of her purse on a Disney Fantasy cruise and someone turned it into security earlier this year. We went to security and they had it right there. She has pic of herself and the kids in the background. So even though phone was locked. She didn't need to show any ID on the spot.

2 weeks ago again phone was left on bench at turks and Caicos airport bench. We boarded plane to Miami. And they were kind enough to announce on over head speaker did someone leave iPhone. I immediately thought of my wife who didn't realize her phone was missing from her handbag. I told flight attendant if its pink iPhone case. She said yes.

So been very lucky with lost iPhones and very kind people.

My cousin has best lost iPhone. I posted about 2 years ago. She left her iPhone in Vegas hotel lobby . And flew back to Miami. She was drunk. Another drunk woman mistakeninly took her pink iPhone thinking it was her and took it back to Southern California.

My cousin ran the phone via find my iPhone and woman who took it was shocked. She didn't realize she had 2 pink iPhones in her handbag. She kindly FedEx my cousin iPhone back to Miami.

Just good and honest people still left in the world.

Do you have it set up with find my iPhone on your tablet, desktop, or notebook?

So my daughter left her iPhone on a plane last night....

That's a frustrating loss. Chances are slim for a return.

My daughter and me too can't wait to turn on our phones after landing while taxiing back to the terminal. That's allowed.

A little surprised that a young girl didn't wish to text someone immediately that they landed etc. :). And then realized that the phone was not there. Returning to the plane immediately was your best chance of finding it.

Being iOS 7 maybe the finder hasn't realized they can't do much with it yet.

Good luck!

PS. AppleCare + is worthwhile. $50 gets you a new phone for loss or damage. Also if you used Amex for the purchase.

I also cover loss or damage under my house insurance. $50 a year covers $5000 in phone or computer loss/damage/theft for the whole family. I'm sort of triple protected.
