Played it recently.

What's interesting to me more than the game, is the different versions of the game.

What I mean is that I'm not talking about those with different branding (read: Simpsons, Star Wars, etc. etc.), but those from different countries. Australia's regular version of Monopoly has different names for the spots than we have, and was totally unexpected when I played it while down there. The UK and French versions are the same as well.

What was better than that, is that my wife has a Large Print/Braille edition of it. I never would have thought that they would have made that if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes... and after seeing it, I can't help but to think "well, why not?!?" :)

Good idea with the large print/Braille version.

It is Monopoly's 80th birthday. Do you still play it? I do.

Love Monopoly. Played it as a kid and still play today. The only game I'll play with kids in the family and not let them win. Also play it a lot on my iPad.

I will sometimes play the iOS version, used to play the flash based version with my friend, but I haven't played the board version in maybe 10 years now.

The first version I played was the 1985 DOS one. Used to play that with my parents.

Holy crap!!

Okay.. looking at some of them, you really have to wonder..

Okay, Hanson and New Direction Edition for the tweens at that time.. I get that.

Porn Masters Edition? Pimp Edition?!? Patriot Act Edition?!? How the heck did Milton Bradley get away with that one?!?

Looking at those three, I'd rush to pick up Pedigree Dog Lover's Edition as fast as I can!

Not in years but it would be fun to play again.

You'll play it once and remember why you haven't played it in years :).

Monopoly is such a dull game, it's why people don't give real board games a fair chance. People think Monopoly is this amazing game, then when they play and remember it's slightly less fun than having their finger nails ripped out, they just won't try anything better.

And Parker Bros., Hasbro, whatever owns them now would rather just keep churning out 2700 versions that sit on shelves collecting dust in people's homes and never see the table than try to convince people to try something a bit different.

The "strategy" is roll, buy, cross your fingers and hope you land on the right square. There is almost no actual decision making in a game that goes on for hours and that is a recipe for boredom.

Try Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Blokus, Transamerica, etc for a real game. They all play in much less time to play than monopoly and simpler more streamlined rules making them easier to learn. And they all have much more decision making which is just more fun.

True. But the Monopoly still has hours of pushing paper around the table, arguing about trades, etc, all of which doesn't make for a good drinking game. If anything it would ruin a good evening of drinking until someone gets drunk enough to walk away from the table.

For a mindless drinking game, how about LCR (which fits in a pocket), or my pick would probably be Chez Geek.

I remember asking Mom to take me to Baltic Avenue when we visited Atlantic City. I wanted to see the $60 houses.

Monopoly requires thought and planning. "Sorry" was preferred by vindictive players. It can get nasty.

I've always found Monopoly to be a very addictive game, and enjoy both the classic and City variants. Its been a few months since I last played though.

I agree 100%. I am glad that I left Monopoly's luck fest behind and started playing real tabletop games a few years ago. Playing good tabletop games should make you go out and look for more good games, which Monopoly doesn't. Between me and my friends we have started a decent collection in a short time. Ticket to Ride is the all time favorite family request, and Carcassonne and Catan go over well with the expansions. In addition to the games you mentioned we also have...
Telestrations
Wits and Wagers
Dixit
Letters from Whitechapel
Pandemic
King of New York
Forbidden Island

I love Monopoly, but after years of playing Hasbro/Parker Brothers games we discovered Guillotine, Ticket to Ride, the DC Deck Building Game (my personal favorite), Legendary, Dominion and Carcassonne. They're WAY better games and SOOO much fun. I'll have to check your other recommendations out, too!

How many of you know about Lizzie Magie?

Actually, - perhaps not all that surprisingly - I had read this story a few yard ago (I suspect in someplace civilised such as the Guardian!) and was entranced at the ironical thought that the original concept had come about from a woman who wished to highlight the evils of excessive capitalism rather than a man who wined to celebrate it.

I had wondered whether someone would remember it in order to mention it - and thank you for doing so, mobilehaathi.

Well, leave it to me to bring the thread dangerously close to PRSI. No need to fall into that quagmire, though. Just thought I'd fill out a bit of history.

Well, I'm glad you did so, because I do remember reading about the game's particular background, and having been fascinated by it.

Actually, I had wondered whether anyone would think to recall it, especially given the irony that the game is nowadays viewed as a celebration of greed and senseless, wanton, accumulation.

Monopoly's birthday

I love Monopoly! I have two board games that I played as a kid and still do: Monopoly and The Game of Life. They're so much fun. I recently bought the "Electronic Banking" edition of Monopoly, it's good but I prefer playing the Original.

Electronic Banking edition? Hmmm, I never heard of this one. Can you buy and sell credit default swaps? ;)
