Until ATV has bluray...

Right now I can do everything with my macbook I can do with a ATV. Actually, I can do even more because I can watch DVDs on my Macbook. So what does having an ATV get me?

Tell you what though: have you guys seen how lousy DVD players have become over the years? Half of them don't track half the discs out there, the other half overheat half way through the movie and quit playing. I had one that said it could play everything from .AVI to .WMVs, but in reality struggled with run of the mill MPGs. I haven't found a single ONE that can play a DVD of MP3 audio... Not to mention how they all absolutely suck at navigating directly to the movie and bypassing all that insipid studio teaser-trailer junk. ---Am I the only one who goes into a rage when the *disc* tells me I can't go directly to the menu, or skip a track? Is there anybody on the PLANET who's "okay with that?" If you are, can I ask you WHY?

Rant aside, I wish Apple *would* add an optical drive (preferably Bluray) to the ATV, because then it might actually be the first player on the market that actually works worth a darn and actually cares about such nit-noidy things like user interface and reliability.

I have 5 LPs:
AFI - Crash Love
Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
Muse - The Resistance
Paramore - Brand New Eyes
Pearl Jam - Backspacer

So far, only Muse has shown up as available for re-download.

Agree, what Apple is clearly doing is pushing the convergence of their technologies more and more. The tablet is a sure thing imho, and it will integrate perfectly with the current hardware they sell. I think it will probably be something like an Apple TV with a screen, internet connectivity and eBook functionalities.

I hope Apple TV 3.0 is what Front Row 3.0 is like.

The problem you hate is because the digital media disc model is set up backwards: the disc controls the playback- not the players. If you remember vinyl, you could (ONLY) go right to the content. VCRs showed movie marketers a way to put commercials in front of the content, BUT, you could fast forward through that to get to the movie. DVD and now BD allow the disc to control playback- if the disc creator so chooses. As a result, the movie marketers have generally decided that showing you their commercials is so important that the discs are set up to NOT allow you to bypass the commercials. With the discs in charge, it is not the players that are at fault.

Perfection

Everyone seems to expect perfection from Apple. The AppleTV is nowhere close, but it's a pretty damn good product compared to the competitors. 3.0 was a very unexciting update, but the more I use it, the more I like it. It's a nice improvement over the previous version. It's great that Apple hasn't forgotten about the early adopters of the AppleTV (at least not yet).

It's a nice improvement, but the hardware NEEDS updating. It can't handle the current functions that well, and it's pathetic that it can't handle 720p @30fps.

A new 1080p model needs to come.
