Beastie Boys Album installs copy protection
http://www.securityfocus.com/archive...3/2004-06-19/0
"It seems that Capitol Records has some sort of new copy protection system, that automatically, silently, installs "helpful" copy protection software on MacOS and Windows as soon as you insert the CD into default systems. I'm not sure exactly what it does yet, but I am sure regreting actually purchasing said media now... they don't deserve my money if they choose to pull stupid stunts like this. Installing software without your permission sounds like viral malware behaviour to me. I certainly hope the AV companies put signatures into their products for this crap." http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showt...copy+protected |

Wow, that is pretty crappy. I read this on the second link you gave, is this true that there is no compact disc logo on this album?
"Yep, all of the various copy-protection schemes suck big time. They all involved 'damaging' the data that is on the CD, and placing false error-correction bits throughout the recording. Which results in imperfect playback, but the major record companies that use these systems insist that these digital errors are inaudible. Maybe to the average listener they are, but it's still disconcerting to know that you can't ever get a 100% correct signal. By the way, you'll notice that you won't see the 'Compact Disc Digital Audio' logo which is on every CD pre-copy protection. This is because the disc violates the CDDA standards (because of the lack of proper error correction)and Philips refuses to allow these discs to carry the logo. Therefore, the disc isn't technically a 'CD', according to the official standards."

Good for Philips. This is a outrage. I am not going to have any 'anti-copy' software automatically installed on MY computer.

Do the CDs in the US that have anti-ripping tech advertise it? There are a couple of Japanese pop CDs I want off yesasia.com and it specifically warns that I won't be able to rip them...so I'm just wondering how true it is.

It looks like the US and UK discs still don't have copy protection on them. http://www.boingboing.net/2004/06/11...s_disc_ha.html
I purchased the new cd and was able to rip it onto my comp and listen to it on my iPod. I did notice that there is a big FBI warning on the back along with a spiel about how piracy is bad and all that. |

great news, this will just send more people to iTunes
Seriously, what are they thinking installing software when you put the CD in your computer?

This copy protection on cds is getting out of hand. No one (who uses an iPod) wants to buy a cd that they may not be able to rip. Its just too much hassle returning it if it doesnt work. They should be forced to state clearly on the packaging what the cd will do and what it won't.

Of course these discs don't have the Compact Disc logos on them... technically they aren't even CDs when you have copy protection software on them. They are... copy-protected discs, I guess. So anyone advertising them as CDs (the term is used loosely for any audio disc, but technically these are NOT), it's false advertising. I dunno if that will hold up in any court, though.

US & UK issues of this cd don't have the "protection". Sounds like EMI just wants to stifle the very lucrative eastern pirates. So I guess we can all relax.

Imagine if Philips did a look and feel trademark case against the people who made these mock CD's much like Apple did against Windows. Make the record companies have to make the things square or black instead of shiny on one side.

may not be too much of an issue
links posted by other people say the copy protection is outside the US/UK only. I suspect canada is exempt as well.
This article talk about another album that is copy protected inside the US/UK. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06...cted_cd_smash/ but also says it is quite likely a mac and get it anyway.

The Beastie Boys have sold out, that's all I can say. Actually I've always sort of thought they have been a record company band. Look at their hits, cds IMO were not that good and I've never understood why some many people have liked them.

RIAA won't learn
Doesn't matter if some CD's have protection. Those of us who don't have it can just rip it and send it all over the place.
FYI, my sis bought the album and ripped it with NO problem. I'm currently enjoying the album until I have enough money to purchase my own copy. |

Beastie Boys in Canada
I just bought the "limited edition" version of the disc in Regina, Sask, Canada. There is a big Copy Controled logo on the back. Time to see there is any "alternative" to Mac OS/ Windows that will allow me to extract the music. Solaris has worked in the past. The stupid thing is that the discs will play in my car's MP3 player, but only if I skip track 1.

Vinyl
Bought my copy on Vinyl. Will be a little more work to get it onto my iPod but at least I don't have to worry about spyware...
