Yes that are the core diode temperatures for the rear CPU, the front CPU is about 5 degrees cooler, but still way beyond the given maximum of these CPUs.

I assume this issues is just a few weeks old. IIRC, the fans went to almost 1600rpm when I stressed the CPUs with 1600% load.
Again, a SMC reset (holding the power button for 5 seconds without the AC plugged in) didn't solve this problem. Pretty strange, isn't it?

2.26GHz octad machine

Can somebody please tell me the idle fan speeds of an 2.26GHz octad machine ?

I've got an eye on the fan control cause I think it's somehow broken. I've got 92° core temperatures and don't know if the fans run faster now.

After a 15 idle.

my boostA and B rpms are at like 1500rpm all the time

I think thats related to the VGA you have inside. When I bought my mac pro it had the GT120 inside and my BOOSTA and BOOSTB fans stayed at 800rpm all the time. When I put in my old 8800GT they went up to 1100RPM all the time. Can someone confirm?

If you don't want to destroy your CPU's, I would suggest you increase the CPU speed with SMC Fan Control. Also are these idle temps ? or are you playing back audio ???

Thank god I found this topic!
I didn't knew there were so many people complaining about the early 2009 MacPro.I saw the post at macrumors about all this heating of CPU on audio playing and I thought maybe this is my case.Cause since last May I have the machine ,I had about 20 kernel panics, even when only application was in use(I don't remember which one each time, sometimes only transmission for example).ost of the times the KPs was like this:

Can anyone tell me if my situation is alike the ones almost everyone is complainning, about that audio-CPU temperature thing?

I was having the same problems. I tried switching places of the dimms. If the errors stay on the same bank, you don't have to accept only new memory modules. I got new memory modules, a new processor board and finally a new processor, which solved my issue. You can read more information about this problem right here:

Okay everyone, feel free to be skeptical (I myself probably would be), but I spoke with a senior level Apple specialist about this on the phone today after having sent videos to him earlier this week.

Without going into details, both because they don't wish me to, nor was I privy to much actual detail, what I can say is that "Apple is investigating the issue" and everyone should be happy soon.

Maybe we should all get in touch with this person..

My money is on a fix being included in the 10.6.3 release. News articles today point to this update being seeded again today.

Cindori, do you have dev access to these seeds, or know someone who does who can confirm?

-bill

I can't say much anymore as I have been officially "silenced", but the fix is forthcoming.

I just emailed sjobsATappleDOTcom. I don't expect anything to happen... I'm just starting to lose hope after two months. Thanks for the incredible effort of Smacman, concorde rules, cl-user, nanofrog and basically everyone else that has made any contribution in clarifying this issue.

Hey, im famous :D

It's quite alright, whats the point of a community if there is no community spirit, eh?

kernel panic in 2009 Mac Pro - Heat related?

I had no problems with my 2006 Mac Pro. Got the 2009 2.66 "Nehalem" processor and had experienced Kernel Panics particularly when processing audio or video files. External FW hard drives would not always mount without a lot of cable swapping and rebooting sessions. Apple had me jumping through hoops to trouble shoot, and even had the gall to tell me not to daisy chain FW drives. Finally, Apple sent a replacement. I was happy with the gesture.

Replacement 2009 2.93 "Nehalem" processor MP (yes I did have to pay the $500. upgrade difference) seemed to resolve the issue until about 3 weeks into the game. KP'ed today when installing a new software driver - simply during the install!

While until today this replacement Mac Pro 2009 had not KP'ed, it would mysteriously go to sleep and couldn't be re-vived without a hard re-boot.
The crazy thing is, I had completely disabled ALL sleep modes in the preferences including disabling the HD sleep modes as well.

A trusted Apple aficionado told me that 'temperature issues could be the cause is the mysterious sleep issue. (he offered this opinion without any knowledge of the MP 2009 heat issue complaints in this forum).

The other problems with this MP 2009 is that my Apogee Duet Sound card, which is an Apple certified product, intermittently went into distortion mode.
Interestingly enough, an audio related issue.

Finally, whats with the MAGIC Mouse! My MM slows down to a crawl and becomes impossible to use. The MM intermittently loses connection with Blue Tooth. The first MM replacement did not help, but the second MM replacement immediately resolved the 'slowing down' issue. This newest MM replacement still loses contact with the Blue tooth but its not nearly as often as with the first two MM.

The entire situation is pretty alarming and I am thinking that this MP 2009 line is terribly flawed. It makes you think, because in August, Apple suddenly seemed to abandoned much interest in the Mac Pro line, deciding to concentrate on Mac Books and iMacs. As a ONE to ONE member, it was pretty frustrating that they stuck me on a Mac BOOK Pro for LOGIC and FINAL CUT tutorials. I was pretty annoyed. I also noticed that the Apple Store I went to had only ONE Mac Pro on the floor. I asked the store manager several times, why I could not use the MP for my tutorials and was told that they needed to have it available IN CASE someone wants to see it demo'd. Naturally I asked why they did not have more than ONE Mac Pro in the Apple Store and I got the same stock answer each and every time 'This is all set up from Apple head office and referred me to the Apple Feedback page to voice my concerns'

In light of what i know now, I am beginning to wonder if Apple stopped pushing the current Mac Pro line due to inherent flaws and decided to kind of 'wait it out' for the introduction of the MP line altogether until the new releases.

Any thoughts?

Reply from Apple Tech

Has anyone gotten this response from an Apple Tech before?

The engineers stated that this is a known issue and they are working on a fix to the issue as they dont have any troubleshooting steps or any fixes at the moment but hopefully there will be one soon so just keep checking your software updates and install any firmware updates or OS updates that become available.

I did tonight.

Note,... known issue

I believe we are getting close to a fix [...]

So after 1/2 a year of banging on Apple's door, a few people (probably our most trusted community members) say they've heard sounds inside. Certainly encouraging, the first glimmers of hope.

Perhaps we should prepare to fall over, as happens when a tug-of-war rope is suddenly dropped at one end. That would be a nice tumble.

One one side I begin to dream of a remedy, on the other side I'll still be left with the knowledge of the lengths that Apple as a whole (including hundreds of Apple support staff worldwide) goes to play deaf and ignore users' very legitimate concerns. I don't think any fix for this bug will change that.

Could it really be a simple a game as the ars technica article. Before that we banged our heads on a brick wall. After, all positive (albeit secretly).

Well if so, we know what to do next time - go for the jugular, start with the NY Times!

PS. Apple - want some ace beta testers, better than your own ...?

Thanks for all the help on this issue. Sorry for my limited help. True case of everyone forming like Voltron to change things. Dude in Core Audio group says "" which is NDA translation for Thanks. :D

Ha ha! Do you know what would be funny about that? I've just downgraded my '09 2.6 quad back down to 10.5.8, because Logic Pro 8 does not play nicely with Snow Leopard.

If this fix turns out to be 10.6.x only, then I'm obviously gonna have to go back to Snow Leopard.

And I'll be forced to upgrade to Logic 9... what a shame (not - it gives me a really compelling reason to put to my wife why I need to shell out on the upgrade!)
