I use Microsoft Word 2008, version 12.1.0. My MacBook uses OS 10.5.3.
When I include a document from Taiwan in Word with readable Chinese characters (and mostly western) the characters are lost in the new document. I am making a book of many articles in a new document and need this one to have all the characters
My word program has Chinese (Taiwan) in its list of languages under tools, system preferences has Chinese characters as does the character palette.
Why are the characters lost? What should I do?

The keyboard settings should not matter. It also shouldn't matter whether the characters are simplified or not.

It might help if you explain more about this file. How do you know it is readable if you cannot read it? If you have a link, I can take a look at it and see if the characters render properly for me.
