Last month, it was discovered that Apple quietly tweaked the 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad 2, equipping the device with a smaller 32-nm die shrink of the A5 system-on-a-chip previously used in the line. The tweaked iPad 2 carries an internal identifier of "iPad2,4", which was first spotted in an iOS 5.1 beta back in November, but at the time it was unclear what the model represented.

A similar die shrink of the A5 was found in the new Apple TV, and it appears that Apple made the move in order to test out production of next-generation chip processes in lower-volume devices. The A5X used in the third-generation iPad continues to be based on a 45-nm process.

Anandtech has now gotten its hands on one of these new iPad 2 models and subjected it to a series of battery life and performance tests, finding that the revised model offers identical performance to other iPad 2 models but with battery life improvements of 15-30% in several benchmarking tests.

Assuming Apple didn't change any fundamentals of its microarchitecture, the iPad 2,4's gains in battery life can be attributed directly to the process. The gains themselves are significant. We measured a 15% increase in our web browsing battery life, a nearly 30% increase in gaming battery life and an 18% increase in video playback battery life. Although Apple hasn't revised its battery life specs, the iPad 2,4 definitely lasts longer on a single charge than the original iPad 2.

Unfortunately, Anandtech notes that there appears to be no way for customers to ensure that they receive one of these revised iPad 2 models for their $399 purchase, as there are still a significant number of the original iPad 2 models in circulation and they can not be distinguished based without opening the box and turning on the device.

For a forum called "Mac" rumours there doesn't seem to be that many Mac rumours...

Apple is a lot more than just Mac when this site was founded in 2001. Get over it.

There simply isn't many macrumors... Except a thinner MacBook Pro

And that's the sites' problem?

This is good news as these chips move to 28-nm in the future we can expect battery life to continue to get better which will be much appreciated with LTE

We're being set up for a sick iPad 4… with a 32nm A6 and an IGZO screen, it's going to have crazy battery life, or a really thin enclosure.

Looking at the graphic on Anandtech's site shows just how HUGE the A5X processor is compared to the 32nm A5

I suspect this new process tech is very important. It will be key towards getting an A5 based iPod Touch and perhaps the mythical iPad mini as well.

I take it the iPad 2,4 would not have the larger 3rd gen iPad battery, in which case these test results are a beautiful thing.

Not one time have I ever even thought my iPad 2 does not last long enough, I mean I only charge the thing once a month as it is. Cheers :apple: Your design efficiencies continue to impress!

The thing I noted from that was the battery live improvement is "spectacular" for such a small change, and the Samsung device was "crappy" as compared to either the new or old iPad 2. Samsung is promoting their device widely on TV and while uptake is pretty good, it appears the "technical features" are lacking in significant ways like battery life, ecosystem, camera quality and software, etc. I suspect its "numbers" are better, such as screen size, camera resolution, price. Tech stuff, not practical use stuff.

Have you looked at the older articles and threads? Half of them are "new powerbook on tuesday???" or something similar. Nothing but Mac-related news is just boring. I like that MacRumors provides general Apple-related and technology-related news

Better in one metric. You still have a retina display, and for me that's worth it.

That's exactly why Apple was hush hush about it. They don't want people returning iPad2's if they don't get one with the newer chip.

Okay I see. Why are you saying Powerbook though?

You have a screen with 2x the resolution both vertically and horizontally, quad core graphics, and incredible optics. I would not say the iPad 2,4 is better, just running even leaner and meaner than before!

This site was created before the iPhone debuted in 2007. Clearly, the site operators have not felt compelled to change the domain name, despite the shift in Apple's business strategy toward mobile devices.

In any case, you should probably accept it.

Apple's main revenue stream is now from iOS devices and has brought them into the forefront of consumer electronics, something that never would have happened if they just stuck with personal computers.

When they changed their company name from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc., that was the writing on the wall. That was back in January 2007.

I'm still using the iPad 1 and loving it. If I were to upgrade, I would go with the improved iPad 2 right now and be totally satisfied with it. These products are usable for years with proper care, if you're not too picky about screen resolution, IMHO. I've just been wanting the iPad 2 over the new iPad for some reason. I'm a very late and slow adopter of technology, I guess.
