My brand new MacBook Air 2012 (2012 11 inch air - 2.0ghz i7 - 8GB Ram - 256GB SSD) has crashed with the gray screen of death 3 times now.

I have seen other reports on this on other sites.

Who else has seen this?

I have seen at least two other reports of kernel panics on the 11" when running Google Chrome. Maybe it's their Flash Player plugin?

i haven't even tried running chrome on mine yet, but will when i get home today. Why not just use safari? I love using it on a mac....at work i use chrome, but on the mac safari is just so good.

Chrome can be useful as an Adobe Flash player, when you don't want to pollute your system with the general plugin. A few years ago, this is how I used it. I simply disabled as many features as possible in Chrome and only used it to play Flash-exclusive content.

Now, I don't even bother.

Bingo! This is the main reason I use Chrome. I don't want the separate flash plugin on my system at all. This flaw has essentially given me a laptop on which I just can't use flash. I might as well go back to my old macbook air.

I'm having occasionally crashes and lock ups since getting my MBA last week. My last one never did it. I think the new graphics driver needs some work.

Occurred twice yesterday on a 13" 2012 pro.

I was using a chrome profile from a time machine backup so created a new one in case there was anything dodgy in it. Not had time to see if that fixed it.

Theres a lengthy thread on the apple site about it.

My suspicion is a chrome/gfx driver clash somewhere.

My first Mac, the 2012 11" I'm on holiday at the moment so have not used the machine for that many hours yet.

But Chrome crashed the system and required a restart.

For the the "Worlds Most Advanced" operating system I was amazed a web browser could completely crash the machine, seems like terrible coding on Apple's part.

Apple should not allow any application to bring down the whole operating system regardless of how badly coded an app might be.

Not had a complete lockup with Windows for years!

Still the Macbook Air's trackpad is delightful, and the machine is extremely fast, so overall happy.

Apple aren't responsible if some no-name abandonware software crashes the system. Stick to reputable software companies.

Also to add, I'm having no problems and this is with consistent hammering of Flash on Chrome, eg almost always having simultaneous youtube tabs open and fully loaded (using the excellent Youtube Options extension).

2012 MBA 13" , have had it for only 2 days now and i have chrome & silverlight (to watch netflix) installed, no crashes so far.

Yup.

Mine crashed three times on Tuesday. Locked up. NOTHING was responsive. Had to kill the power to restart. I was working in Chrome all three times when it occurred and the error report fingered Chrome as the culprit.

Yesterday, I worked in Firefox all day while utilizing the same apps I was simultaneously working in before (Parallels, Spotify, Photoshop) and sure enough: no crashes.

why dont you just stop using Chrome? Isn't Safari is better anyway.

Have you read the thread? A huge benefit of chrome is that flash is built in. That way people like me dont have to install flash into OS X at all and can keep it regulated to just chrome without it contaminating my whole system.

wait, what?

so if Microsoft Windows 95 crashes due to buggy software, you don't blame it on its (windows 95's) incompetencies to properly sandbox/protect the OS from such things?

I got my machine on Monday, and have had this issue oddly enough once each day of ownership. Don't recall seeing it before (or if it happened, didn't check my logs to verify it was chrome) over the last couple years of using Chrome on OSX. That said, my prior machine had Flash installed separately, now I'm using Chromes Flash.

It's nice to hear Canary fixes this, which means whatever is causing this will be addressed in the regular build soon enough, but going to Canary may cause an assortment of other problems as it's cutting edge nightly builds. Unfortunately as a professional web dev I need to know I'm working with a stable - crashing machine aside - build.

Same thing is happening to me on my 13 MBA when using Chrome. I originally purchased an 11 inch before returning it for the 13 and that also froze on me a few times while using Chrome.

Just got off the phone with Apple and they said there were no known issues and that I should basically use Safari and see if that helps...

Fingers crossed but since resetting my profile its been fine. Wondering if it carried over some nvidia workaround from my old macbook.

I've seen a number of posts where people complain about crashing with their new laptops, and in all the posts, chrome is the common denominator. I'd remove it and see if stability returns.
