Is this possible i know it sounds unlikely but with the competition heating up, can they afford to wait until next September/Oct for a refresh?

If they did a march refresh of the Mini how people woudl react

No, they tend use WWDC for the iPhone update, iPads are now seemingly in the fall. I wouldn't expect a refresh until next fall at the earliest. Its anyone's guess whether that update will include a retina model.

They use WWDC for iPhone? They haven't since the 4.

look at the retina 3rd gen iPad. it was refreshed already in 6mos. looks like the competition is getting stronger that is why they are doing it every 6mos

It is within the realm of possibility that Apple could have decided to go with a 6 month refresh cycle for iPads going forward, however it seems extremely unlikely. Why they updated from 3rd gen to 4th gen this week is very odd behavior given their past strategies. But who knows, maybe this is the new normal. Still, I won't conclude that they are shifting their upgrade strategy unless I see it happen again. I think it was just a fluke this time.

I'm ordering a mini tonight. If there were a new one in March that was a retina or folded my laundry, I'd be happy and order that one too. I would be able to sell the mini, at that time for roughly $225. I'm basing that figure on the fact that today, I can sell my original iPad for over $200 on ebay and that device is 2 1/2 yrs old. These things do a good job of holding their value. If there were a new one every 3 months it's not a big deal, as long as they continue to hold their value.

I keep hearing that Apple is accelerating their product releases, or they need to, because of the competition heating up.

What am I missing? I'm not seeing any serious competition for the iPads. Or the iPhone, really.

There are derivative products, certainly, but all based on inferior platforms and relying on bottom-feeder pricing for appeal. Apple has never cared about that market segment.

I think Apple releases updates when new technology enables it. The A6X yields came up to speed and Lightning is the new I/O standard for iOS devices, so it was time for a 4th generation iPad.

Back to thread topic, it's hard to imagine moving the iPad mini to Retina as soon as June, because it will almost certainly still be the best 7" tablet available at that time, and it's hard to imagine a Retina display not costing more than what's in it now. But sometimes I enjoy being surprised.

I would like to order one tonight as well, however I am unusually uncertain as to the black vs. white choice...

Both look really good in pictures. Normally I gravitate toward black (all of my iPhones have been black), mainly because the screen looks so good framed by a black bezel. However, I am really liking the silver back of the white models compared to the slate back of the black ones. Of course this is obviously all based on online pics. And to make it worse, I haven't even seen the iPhone 5 in person yet to compare the silver vs. slate as I haven't had a chance to go up to the Apple store to check out the new models yet.

I may have to wait until they are on display to decide. If only they offered mix and match so I could have a black bezel and silver back.

upvote and agree, I guess we will know with sales if they break out the mini sales #.

My other reason for this thread was the IGZO coming into mass production or more of a commodity . That would help prices and battery life of course for he mini.

1 iteration doesn't make a pattern. They might update again in 6 months, or 12 or 18... or anything in between. There is no predictable pattern. Yes, there were a couple of years where it seemed annual updates in March was THE time for iPad updates. But that's over now. And based on all of the whining, if I was Apple, I'd be sure to shift dates around so that there was never a predictable pattern for upgrades. 1) it would reduce the "wait for the next week/next month refresh" and 2) it might reduce the whine the next time some of us no longer can claim "latest & greatest" for some expected period of time.

For this latter group, I encourage you to buy a Mac Pro as soon as it is updated. It seems like you'll have "latest & greatest" for years if you do that. And if any of you bought the cube, you're still enjoying the "latest & greatest" version of that Mac more than a decade later.

You shouldn't use this release as a baseline. No telling what Apple will do. Anything is possible.

I really wanted to get the iPad Mini, but now am going to wait to play with one first too see if I should go with it, or the new iPad.
