How can I check if my mac is D/L or U/L without my consent

I've noticed a significant increase in my bandwidth having received an email from my ISP informing me I'm nearly reaching my monthly limit.

Is there a way to check my mac to see what has been been downloaded or uploaded on my mac?

Are there any logs I can look at within console?

Little Snitch will do what you want.

Do you have a wireless network? This sounds more likely to be a case of someone else using your network, as opposed to your computer.
