Bought a new 13" MBP Retina yesterday, amazing machine, beautiful. However while troubleshooting an unrelated network problem, I noticed that when I run the network utility and ping my router (Apple Airport Extreme - previous Generation) I have huge lag spikes when pinging it.

It may go under 1 ms for one ping, then skyrocket to 200ms on the next, then go to 80, 30, etc, back and forth. However if I use the network while running the ping test, they seem to normalize at <3ms. I ran a speedtest and got my full throughput (118 megabit down, 30 megabit up - Optimum Ultra)

Is this normal? My Late 2011 iMac doesn't do this on wifi, it gets <1ms pings to the router.

I read up on this and found some old threads from a year ago where people mentioned it may have to do with apple drivers and turning off the network card rapidly to save power, thus causing latency on these tests but not affecting "real-world" performance. Is this true? Anyone else with a new MBP have the same issue? I don't want to have to trek all the way back to the Apple store for a diagnosis if this is normal.

If you're not dealing with any sort of network performance problems, I'd not worry about it. Maybe it is a problem with ping, but if you're not experiencing any issues then its not a problem with actual usage.

Well I noticed some pages had delays in loading, so it may still be, I'm just curious if anyone else has heard of this or had this.

If anyone reading this has a new retina MBP that just came out with Haswell, or a Haswell MBA, could you just open network utility and ping your internal router IP while not doing anything else on the computer (networking wise)? Do your pings also wildly fluctuate or are they normal? (Like 80-250ms)

I'd like to know if others have this problem.

The first thing to do is to change the wifi channel.

Did you try this ?

I'll try it when I get home, but like I said, I tried it on a second router at a neighbors home, I had the same symptoms. I also ran the test on my iMac from 2010 connected via wifi to my router, no problems. Its something with the laptop.

edit: Here is the thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1111925/

This talks about pretty much the same issue I am experiencing it, they say its apparently normal. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I guess I may be the only one consistently getting this, so I made an appointment for Saturday to possibly exchange it at the apple store.

However, if anyone here DOES have the new late 2013 rMBP or even the mid-2013 MBA with Haswell, could you please open network utility and run the ping test on your local router? If its really software and is part of some sort of battery saving thing, everyone should have it, but if its a hardware fault, then it would be only me. I tested it on an Airport Extreme from the last generation and on an older linksys, exact same symptoms. Initial webpage loads seem slow sometimes, but I'm wondering if thats just me imagining it, or these pings are actually causing it.

To be quite honest from a logical standpoint, the pings become normal when the network is being utilized, so I feel its some aggressive power saving, but someone else with a new MBP or MBA can definitely put my doubts to rest quickly. Help!

I started this log as I was downloading a large file, you can see the MS is between 0 and 4 consistently. The second the download stops and the computer is in network idle, the pings skyrocket. Either my hardware is really messed up or this is some sort of new power saving feature.

Can anyone please make a log like this and post it, someone in another forum posted theirs and it is similar to mine, making me thing its software and not hardware. (I think any haswell equipped mac would do, MBA or new MBP.

15" rMBP Late 2013 checking in here - I have the same problem and it appears numerous others on Apple's Discussion Forums also have the same issue.

Did you manage a fix or replacement for it as of yet?

Here's a ping output from one I just ran:
