Here, from most recent to least recent, is a list of tunes in the U.S. iTunes Music Store that were free downloads in 2006. Bold marks tunes that appear to be free indefinitely. Apple generally issues new free music on Tuesdays, when I check for it and update this list. Please post to this thread if you spot other free tunes. Links to the newest free iTunes can usually be found in the bottom left corner of the iTMS home page. When a song is newly offered, the last link on the line below works best. For songs from past weeks or months, the first link is typically better. For abbreviations used and other sources of free tunes, see post below.

Here is a website that has free downloads during the Holiday by a promoter named Andy Cirzan who spends a lot of his free time scouring record stores, thrift shops and flea markets for odd and obscure Christmas music.

The iTMS in France also has free downloads. For those of you that cannot read French, it's the one labeled Telechargement Gratuit - Single de la Semaine (that means Free Download - Single of the Week). I live in the US and don't have a French credit card, so I cannot get these songs, but they should be added to the list, as France is the only non-English-speaking country with free downloads in its iTMS.

EDIT: If someone would please gift me a free song from iTMS Canada or iTMS France (you need a valid credit card in that country), I would maintain the free download lists for those iTMSs. Actually, I'd also like to have UK and Australia accounts as well. PM me for my e-mail.

For example, if you redeem it in UK, the system will treat it as a valid code and ask you to enter your account or create one. After entering or creating it will say this code is US only and you cannot redeem it.
So, you can use this way to create accounts.

But now, the code is dead (someone has redeem it in US store). You cannot redeem it in any store.
