I had to change my Pampers Baby-Dry with UltraAbsorb™ twice during the Stevenote. I'm duly impressed, despite no shuffle updates.

Why the early update on the iMac?

a) It's a top seller.

b) To keep up with the new MacBooks!

Now you can see why the low-end (iBook, Mac Mini) could NOT have transitioned first. But a new Mac Mini and low-end laptops can't be TOO far off

The quad G5 is still a great system, but it will be weird to see it stand alone on PPC (at least briefly) this year. I'm not surprised the transition started today--it's what I always expected. But I MIGHT be surprised by how quickly the transition finishes...

Wow. Mammals.org is totally bogged down. ("What's an Intel chip doing in a Mac? A whole lot more that it's ever done in a PC." Ouch. "Wishes do come true." Ha!)

Agreed, this is really lame.

Seems like a kind of crappy Keynote, aside from the new hardware, which is actually pretty sweet.
I don't want either, I am waiting for the intel PMS (or MacMacs) but I like the potential perfromance boost based on what we are seeing in these!

What will I get if I plug:

iMac —>*Mini DVI to DVI adapter —>*DVI to HDMI Cable —>*HDTV ?

Will the iMac output to my TV in HD?

What about content protection?

Sorry, I'm a little clueless.

Thanks

DVI can support HDCP which is the copyright protection... Not sure if new Macs have this built in...

LOLOLOLOL!!!
Now that Apple computers are using Intel, they will soon have PMS.
Um, that reminds of an interesting conversation today with my odd adolescent friends about Macs being gay guys, Windows comps lesbians (the Windows lovers claimed bisexual for compatibilty), and my quote.
"In the computer world, it's best to be bisexual."
Not that it's not ok normally.... won't get into that again. Anyone remember last night?? XD

My question is why the G5 one is the same price as the new Intel one.
Hello, Apple, the G5 one is now obsolete....lower the price!

C) more likely to be used with games and Professional Apps than the Mini, so it gives the developers more of a tranistion to get their Apps intel compatible.

Damn. I was really hoping the Mini would be one of the first to go intel, then I could pair it with one of those gorgeous 23" Cinema Displays. I am also somewhat disappointed that they didn't do anything to tweak the look of the iMac- ie bring the height down to make it look more like a picture frame. Is there some reason why they couldn't make the iMac still thinner and smaller now that they don't have the heat issues with the G5?

Now I'm torn between waiting still longer for my dream system which would include a 23" Cinema and an Intel based Mini (MacNano?) or buying one of those bulky 20" iMacs. But what if they dumb down the Mini too much with a single core Intel whatever, and a crappy video chip? Now if they would only release a 23" iMac....

So much for O'Grady's 42"/50" Plasma iMac rumor. Knew it was a load of BS. Probably just posted the story to get hits on his site.

the imac, as it was released yesterday, makes me happy enough anyway and it stands alone as a great product, plasma or no plasma

how to get a free modem from Apple

If you go to this page it seems to say that you don't need a stinking modem in your new macbook or imac http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/faxing/

I called up Apple tech support and they just didn't understand this at all. So, they are sending me a free modem, haha... what a crazy thing. The sadest thing is that I emailed Apple 3 times and even called up tech support a month ago with my isight and told a genius at the Apple store. They just won't change that page??? Makes no sense... are they building in efax or jfax support? Yes, some ISP's may allow faxing through your cable modem but I think Apple better fix that page or a lot of people are going to get free modems, or worse yet another lawsuit.

There really doesn't seem to be much excitement about the iMac.

Not many pages here compared to the Powerbook (sorry Mac Book Pro).

iMac seems like a great machine, and it even has min-DVI now, which allows you to output to DVI like up to a 23 inch cinema display. That could be handy.

I'm probably going to order oen.

That is really dumb. All they need to do is remove the "or hardware" and they are set. At the bottom of the page they need to specify that the software is compatible with any Apple brand modem or USB modems conforming to blah blah specification.

Monitor spanning

It says the Intel iMac supports extended desktops, spanning on to displays up to the 23" size. (Or larger if analog.) Is that new? I don't recall any past iMac doing anything more than mirroring (without a hack).

http://www.apple.com/imac/whatsinside.html

A wall-mounted 20" iMac with a 20" Cinema Display wall-mounted above it would be kinda cool (I've always wondered why more people don't custom mount their iMacs. Do the thinner G5/Intel iMacs not allow that anymore?)

PS, The new "What's an Intel chip doing in a Mac?" hotline (1-800-854-3680) amuses me somehow.

They now have an iMac that will outpower most PowerMac G5 Duals! Awesome! But sad for me and others that have an old tech PPC iMac, they won't be worth much anymore.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw 2-3X the speed of a iMac G5.

The 2.1 G5 was already a close runner up to its Powermac counterpart. Now it should blow it out of the water. With a 20" screen to boot. I leaning towards changing my mind about the All-In Ones.

The MacBook Pro has my attention though.

I.
