That's nice and all... but where's the Mini?

Reading not just the forums here but elsewhere, there is >a lot< of disappointment being expressed about not having an updated Mac Mini this go-around, especially one with home theater capabilities. Personally, I didn't care about anything else Steve had to say... I have my money in hand and I was just waiting for it to show up in the Apple Store.

Color me blue.
 
If history is any judge (which it isn't, because the Intel is a whole new paradigm for marketing), the mini can't compete with the iMac on specs.

We'll see.

You are right. But oh how easily it could you know?
 
It would be nice to see a mini that's just a little slower and has a graphics card that's one step behind (which would be a 128MB x600), but that doesn't seem realistic.
 
Guess we'll have to wait for a while. The cost of the Core CPU will eat up most of the manufacture cost of the Mini. Wait till July, new MacMini then, new PowerMacs with two Core Duo's and I'm guessing a new iBook, and the iMac will be upgraded. This time next year? Perhaps a new iMac design.

I'm guessing the PowerMac will be the last, the quad G5 is a lot faster than a Core Duo.
 
There were a ton of people waiting for updated PowerBooks. I think it's a good thing that they released the new Core Duo MacBook first. The Mini users can wait a little longer :cool:

What is the cost of the Intel CPU they're using in the new MacPro laptop?
 
Hmm. OK Mr Jobs, we can get 2 new computers out the door with Intel chips in time for MWSF. How about our best selling unit (iMac) and most neglected (PB) lines? Oh yeah, they're also our most profitable. Or would you rather us do the lower margin mini and consumer notebook?

Good point. Anyone know what and when the big Expo events are between now and then? I am thinking that the updated Mac mini and entry-level MacBook, both aimed at the Education market might be announced at an Education event and that the April 1st event will see the home theater stuff as a third business unit.

Dude - i was a little saddened by the lack of an Intel 'Viiv' mini. I had a mate who recently bought a DVI LCD monotir for his windows machine - and wanted to switch. I suggested there might be a chance of an Intel Mac mini - and he sorted out some cash to buy one. He literally had the card and the Apple Education telephone number pre-dialled (i warned him of huge interest) but he was p1ssed when he found out iMacs and MacPro's (or whatever they're called) released.

Does this mean there'll be no 64-bit Power Mac? later on this year? Do Intel do a 64-bit dual Core chip? Can't we have the new PM's run AMD chips?! Please?!

I estimate around June. That's when the single core yonah will be out. (dual core in a mac mini? that's crazy, make it cheaper don't make it a photoshop beast).

Just wait until Intel's next family of chips are released in the second half of the year - Merom (replacement for Yonah), Conroe (desktops - iMac et al) and Woodcrest (Power Macs). All these will be 64-bit and even better than Yonah.

I'm a bit annoyed about the lack of an Intel-based Mac Mini as well. I am thinking of switching (using PCs at home as well as at work gets annoying) and a Mac Mini would be a nice, low risk introduction to the wonderful world of Apple (if I don't like it, I can eBay it; if I do like it and want to switch, I can buy an Intel PowerMac next year and dual boot Windows XP/Vista for when I need to use Visual Studio .NET).

If Steve had announced an intel Mini yesterday, I would probably have ordered one by now. I may buy one away, just for the hell of it - it's only £500 or so - and may be a better experience for a beginner like me, as I wouldn't run into problems with software not running on x86 or any potential slowness of Rosetta.

Hmm...
 
I want a bigger mini with 2 RAM slots, 3.5" hard disk, ShaderModel 3-level graphics and *7448*.

In those Apple labs - there are probably prototypes of Mac mini's with the new 7448 chips, a prototype with a G5 and possibly a dual core G5 clocked at 1.6GHz or something like that - who knows. If they get a good enough heatsink....

Would love to be a Hardware Engineer for Apple right now - they must be having a good time in there! People keep talking about how iPod was all over the WWDC and MWSF - this year it was all Mac. Lovely.

mac mini was a headless iMac. So, same kit as Intel iMac - no screen. We need the Dual video outputs for a TV! And hopefully Blu-Ray - cos the standards have just been set. Blu-Ray - 50GB/disc!! :)

I could see a big Apple event for their 30th anniversary, They could launch into the home media space with the Mac mini and the Plasmas (unless they were just pulling our legs on that one)
