Popular smartwatch maker Pebble appears to be in some financial trouble, according to a few sources "close to the company," as reported by TechCrunch. The company is having trouble maintaining its growth, turning to a bank in its home base of Silicon Valley for not only a $5 million loan but a $5 million line of credit. According to those same sources, banks in the Valley have been turning down Pebble's financial support requests repeatedly.

The smartwatch company's rocky monetary troubles come a few weeks after a well-publicized Kickstarter campaign, which reached its $500,000 goal in under 20 minutes of going live. The project's final funding amount - which received numerous stretch goals along the way - saw 78,471 backers pledge $20,338,986 for the new slimmer design and color display smartwatch.

The company actually received around $18 million from the Kickstarter campaign, after fees, and currently staffs about 150 people with more being hired in new positions. Despite all of this success, and an infusion of forward momentum thanks directly to Apple's Apple Watch-focused "Spring Forward" event, the logistics of running the company have forced CEO Eric Migicovsky and fellow company heads to seek venture capitalist funding "in order to stay afloat."

TechCrunch's source also noted that numerous employees were unhappy with the company's direction "as it turns to face competitors from Apple, Android, and outside." This is perhaps alluding to the company's nonchalant attitude towards poking fun at Apple on its own website and Migicovsky's somewhat apathetic responses to Apple's impending entrance into the smartwatch market.

With Pebble facing such troubles just a few weeks after the Apple Watch launch, two events that may yet still be unrelated, it'll be interesting to see how Apple's competitors in the smartwatch market maneuver themselves to stay successful in an ever-growing and crowded field. Still, some employees are happy with Pebble and see a good future for the still-fairly-young company. "We're a young company. The outlook for Pebble is very positive," said a current employee who preferred to remain anonymous when speaking with TechCrunch. "It's been a remarkable journey thus far."

Pebble might not survive since they don't have that much marketshare and now both apple and android have wearables that directly compete with their products.

Looks like my prediction from February is coming true. https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/20668804/

Quote from above thread:
Pebble 1 year = bankrupt.

Admittedly not bankrupt yet and they still have 8 months to prove me wrong :p

Also this post of mine from the same thread:

I think the Apple Watch will eat Pebbles lunch and this time next year we'll see Pebble shutting down their operations or downscaling significantly to stay running.

And everyone told me how wrong I was. It's only May and they're already in trouble.

150 people on staff? Doing what? I think their issue is poor management unfortunately, there is no way they needed to grow that fast

I am really not sure this is all doom and gloom at this point. There is likely a logical business reason for them to need cash other than because they are going bankrupt. That said, I don't honestly see a long term potential for the company. I feel like as Apple pushes their watch to become more advanced Pebble will be left in the dust, however unlike when it happened to RIM as Apple pushed the iphone, Pebble won't have enough cash to even attempt recovery. That is likely why the banks won't give them money

I think that Pebble is a nice watch, but not as nice as the Apple Watch. In addition, it is turning out to be less functional than the Apple Watch. They will need to come up with something to stand out if they want to survive. Having a product that is not as good, aesthetically, not as good, functionally, and yet close in price, does not make a winning formula in the long run.

Looks like they could be gone next year...
here is my post before apple watch launched.

Good for them to stay positive and optimistic. But Apple watch hasn't launched yet. it could increase pebble sales for people looking apple watch alternative or they could be gone next year as apple watch become the giant in the category.

Time will tell.

I agree with this completely. 150 people is a huge amount. I'd not see them needing more than 25 people when considering the hardware and software they've released so far. Definitely doesn't look like it came from a huge company with 150 employees.

plus their only advantage, which i battery life, doesn't really amount to much. Charging every day vs every 7 days really isn't that much of an issue to the general public. If Pebble has like 2 years battery life it would be different but as it is a nightly charging cycle is just easier to remember to do, although 2 days would be nice just in case you forgot

Why does it seem people want and are happy to watch Goliath crush the little guy here?

150 doesn't seem like THAT many between people to administrate, do R&D, product design, international shipping, marketing etc etc etc

Nothing to rejoice in here, people. As consumers, healthy competition benefits us all.

Maybe you're right but I expected them to have shipping handled by a courier and I also expected them to have a manufacturing partner.

Are they actually making and shipping the watches by hand and those 150 employees are included in that?

I was thinking the 150 was just hardware and software designers and their managers.

150 staff members - and they couldn't field a spokesperson to say that officially?

Perhaps they can't because the outlook isn't so positive after all...

Because the "Little Guy" has serious attitude problem. Instead of being classy, the CEO mocked apple repeatedly, and if you have seen any video of him know this guy to be just plain creepy IMO.

Not ever David deserves to beat a Goliath. They need to prove their worth to their customers, and in this case they just got out classed in product and company.

Yep! If Game Dev Tycoon has taught me anything, it's not to hire too many employees too quickly ...

150 people paying themselves a nice salary from the KS funds all the suckers (marks) gave them. I need to start a KS fund and pay myself $500,000 salary.

because this is an apple enthusiast site? maybe?

to me it doesnt matter so much who the players are or what size they are. i think the AW is a better product for the use cases ("jobs to be done") that i have for it.
