Vodka and the Freezer

Hey folks!

So, I've frozen my bottle of Vodka. It's not actually frozen of course, the alcohol takes care of that, but it's subzero.

Is it safe to knock back a shot of 'frozen' Vodka? Or is it going to freeze my tonsils to the back of my throat and kill me? Hell, I don't even know if I can pour it into a warm glass without it cracking. Experienced alchi's, I need your help!

I've never had a problem drinking frozen vodka.

Yes it's perfectly safe for human consumption, even 'frozen'.

Hope it's something good, and not like Vodka of the Gods from the plastic jug if you're planning on shooting it...

You can take a cardboard milk carton, fill it with water, place the vodka bottle in the carton, and place that in the freezer.
...When you wake up you'll have a nice vodka bottle in an ice cube; wrap a towel around it and it will stay "frozen" for the entire party.

Pour it into a glass? What's a "glass?" It shouldn't crack as long as the glass is still room temperature.

Or you could just buy yourself a nice bottle of whiskey, or tequilla!

Speaking of which, there's a bottle of 8-year-old rum sitting in my liquor cabinet waiting to be opened...

Oh you guys, you make me so proud to belong to MR

Gawd, subzero shots... I'm still scared. It's only crappy Smirnoff I'm afraid, but I've got some Kettle One arriving tomorrow. I found a list here that I intend to work my way up, though Kettle One was the best one Ocado had for delivery.

I like "frozen" vodka but a bartender friend of mine swears that it's a no-no to freeze it. Something about the rate at which it melts ice is different and throws off the chemistry in mixed drinks and martinis. Straight shots are fine obviously.

And here I thought that in hard liquor, the alcohol itself kept the rest of the fluid from really freezing.

Well according to the queer eye guys for serving purposes you're not supposed to put it in the freezer. The ICe melts and dilutes the liquor exactly to the right temp and dilution .... but for shots freezing it is fun. I have to wonder why you're so amazed at this ... I mean I kind of guessed it was common knowledge ... just don't do it to your beer!

@ me? I'm not amazed, I just don't want to die just yet Hell, if 'freezing' Smirnoff could help take the edge off that can only be a good thing. I guess there's only one thing left to do

Shots only btw, not for mixers, I'd heard that was a nono also.

I've always kept my Vodka at room temp and used ice shot glasses to get the vodka to a nice cold temp.

They look super, faintember!

pseudobrit - it's all I have to hand at the mo I'm afraid, what with it being 01:22 and all. I don't think my tastebuds are quite ready for much gin yet anyway

Only if you're using tonic or vermouth for your ice cubes. Nothing sucks more than getting melted ice water in your martini. Dilutes the hooch.

Just out of curiosity, can any hard liquor (tequila, rum, vodka, gin, etc) be stored in a freezer without it freezing? The engineer in me thinks the answer is probably yes, but I was just curious.

I believe so, though apparently, from what I heard at least, Tesco Value Vodka actually goes solid. That figures!

That's rich! Thankfully I have Absolut Citron, which I guess is probably at least half a step better? *runs off to freeze vodka*

I might have to go get a set of those for this summer / next year. Question thought. It looks like the bottom gets filled ... is there anyway to avoid this?

I would also imagine that would be kind of cool for an irish car bomb or a boilermaker

Only problem with frozen vodka is the potential for Sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia, a very painful condition

Well, it has to do with the amount of alcohol in it. Ethanol has a very low freezing point (-114 Celsius / -173 Fahrenheit), so it's the major determinant of the "freezability" of a liquor. Beer can freeze because it's alcohol content is low enough that it doesn't depress the freezing point all that far below that of pure water. But almost any hard liquor won't freeze, unless it's really, really weak.

Don't you mean "brain freeze?"
