Vodka and the Freezer
Hey folks!
So, I've frozen my bottle of Vodka. It's not actually frozen of course, the alcohol takes care of that, but it's subzero. Is it safe to knock back a shot of 'frozen' Vodka? Or is it going to freeze my tonsils to the back of my throat and kill me? Hell, I don't even know if I can pour it into a warm glass without it cracking. Experienced alchi's, I need your help!

Yes it's perfectly safe for human consumption, even 'frozen'.
Hope it's something good, and not like Vodka of the Gods from the plastic jug if you're planning on shooting it...

You can take a cardboard milk carton, fill it with water, place the vodka bottle in the carton, and place that in the freezer.
...When you wake up you'll have a nice vodka bottle in an ice cube; wrap a towel around it and it will stay "frozen" for the entire party.

Pour it into a glass? What's a "glass?"
It shouldn't crack as long as the glass is still room temperature.

Or you could just buy yourself a nice bottle of whiskey, or tequilla!
Speaking of which, there's a bottle of 8-year-old rum sitting in my liquor cabinet waiting to be opened...

Oh you guys, you make me so proud to belong to MR
![]() Gawd, subzero shots... I'm still scared. It's only crappy Smirnoff I'm afraid, but I've got some Kettle One arriving tomorrow. I found a list here that I intend to work my way up, though Kettle One was the best one Ocado had for delivery.

I like "frozen" vodka but a bartender friend of mine swears that it's a no-no to freeze it. Something about the rate at which it melts ice is different and throws off the chemistry in mixed drinks and martinis. Straight shots are fine obviously.

And here I thought that in hard liquor, the alcohol itself kept the rest of the fluid from really freezing.

Well according to the queer eye guys for serving purposes you're not supposed to put it in the freezer. The ICe melts and dilutes the liquor exactly to the right temp and dilution .... but for shots freezing it is fun. I have to wonder why you're so amazed at this ... I mean I kind of guessed it was common knowledge ... just don't do it to your beer!

Hell, if 'freezing' Smirnoff could help take the edge off that can only be a good thing. I guess there's only one thing left to do ![]() Shots only btw, not for mixers, I'd heard that was a nono also.

I've always kept my Vodka at room temp and used ice shot glasses to get the vodka to a nice cold temp.

Vodka's for lightweights. Get yerself some dry gin. Plymouth or Tanqueray Ten are winners. Freeze it and make a nice martini. Noilly Prat and a twist, thanks.

They look super, faintember!
pseudobrit - it's all I have to hand at the mo I'm afraid, what with it being 01:22 and all. I don't think my tastebuds are quite ready for much gin yet anyway

Just out of curiosity, can any hard liquor (tequila, rum, vodka, gin, etc) be stored in a freezer without it freezing? The engineer in me thinks the answer is probably yes, but I was just curious.

Thankfully I have Absolut Citron, which I guess is probably at least half a step better? *runs off to freeze vodka*

Only problem with frozen vodka is the potential for Sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia, a very painful condition
