Paramount Movies Coming To iTunes Today?

The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required) claims that CEO Steve Jobs may announce today the availability of Paramount Pictures' catalog, which includes titles such as "Forrest Gump," "Mission: Impossible," and "Star Trek." However, it does not appear as though new releases would be included in the deal (yet).

Quote:
Paramount decided that by only providing catalog titles, which will be sold at $9.99, it would get most of the benefit from the download service and less of the hassle from retailers, say people familiar with the situation. They reasoned that catalog titles will provide more revenue than new releases.

The deal is an important step for Paramount's parent company Viacom, which came under attack last year for its lack of digital vision.

If the iTV (or whatever ) is going to take off, it will need more content than just Disney titles

I don't know why the networks don't jump on this one straight away...I'm sure a lot of piracy takes place over people hooked on junk American television that doesn't make it's way across the pond for a year or so.

And of course, it would be nice if it went both ways...I'm sure there are people who would love to watch some of the european stuff that are currently getting it off torrents as well.

Oh, I'm sure we've missed some stuff. For instance, we haven't gotten ANY reliable recon on any Mac stuff. I guarantee you an iMac or something is going to be updated today

some movies are better than no movies. any step that increases the catalog of the itunes movie store is a good one. it's also a good way for paramount to test the viability of the online music store. and when they realize it's a good means of distribution, i'm sure new releases won't be too far behind.

I am excited about what The Wall Street Journal and the rest of us don't yet know.

I am getting my hopes up for one big surprise! And it's only hours away

But we won't know what we hit or missed for another three hours. Who knows maybe they won't preview iWork '07, of course then again maybe Bill Gates will come on stage and announce they just aquired Apple, and Microsoft is indeed the leader in the Digital Music Player Market ahead of schedule, and Vista will be delayed for the consumers for another month due to critical updates.

Of course I could have avoided MacRumors, ThinkSecret, Macintouch etc if I had wanted everything to be a surprise. ;-)

The speculation is part of the fun for me.

Cool if true. We need more content that is not Disney! Nothing wrong with the house of mouse it's just more content means drawing more folks. I am waiting to pick up a refurbed video iPod so it draws closer.

In other words, money for (practically) nothing.

Sounds like a smart choice for Paramount. Get more money from the catalog while not pissing off the retail channels too much.

Why? You can pick up the Season sets for around $50 now, and eventually the remastereds will be out as well.
