iPhone iPod: What’s wrong with you?!

Lunch time. I take off my embroidered toy store apron, clock out in the POS, and scamper off to Whole Foods for a quick lunch of vegetarian lentil and spinach soup and a ciabatta roll.

Eating my soup, browsing the internet on EDGE, listening to some sweet, sweet Matt the Electrician. I click into a text box on Facebook and start typing. The music cuts off, and I return to the home screen.

I think there’s something wrong with my iPhone, the "best iPod ever made."

I restart the music, and begin typing again. Safari quits! I repeat this little dance a few more times until I finally give up on the internet and just listen to music and people-watch until my lunch break is over. How un-technological of me. It’s 2007! There should be internet on my iPod.. err… iPhone!

I took mine with me on a 6 hour road trip today and was having the exact same problem... pretty frustrating. That's what I get for getting a 1.0 product I guess. I'm sure they'll have a fix sometime soon, right?

No problems here. Great iPod. Great Phone.

No problems here. Great iPod. Great Phone. Edge is working well too. Haven't had soup in quite awhile. Great sandwich today while listening to music on my iPhone.

Well if it keeps acting up go ahead and send it over to me. I could care less.

same thing happening here. do a hard reset (hold down the top right button until you see the apple logo)...it seemed to help temporarily for me.
i'm sure it'll be fixed in a software update soon.

that happened to me twice, but since then everything has been great.

i was disappointed in: the lack of (video) coverflow and that the audio from your videos cuts out when you leave the iPod channel.

besides that, me loves my iPhone.

Man that sounds like a pain. Hopefuly the problem is fixed with the restore, and thanks for the heads up on the pictures. I've been listening to "The Roots" and surfing MR over EDGE for about an hour with no issues, so hopefuly none develop :-)

I've also noticed the phone getting pretty warm in some situations, but it's oddly cool at the moment even with this constant use. I think it's just because there's a fan going in the room and hitting me occasionaly.

EDIT: I think I just reported this post on accident :-P I just had to hit the little button to see what it was...

i experienced similar results with my web browsing. coupled with my iPod playing, both would also quit out.
i have better success but still not problem free when just using as an iPod. but it is consistent with browsing and typing in text fields.

given the high reports of this, i'd say no more than the month of July before we get an update.

Since it seems like this is being reported as an intermitent problem by those seeing it I was wondering if it might be memory or concurrent application issue. I opened up each of the apps one-by-one while listening to music, but all is still fine. The only strange thing was that my music faded out when I started my YouTube video, but it never faded back up when I was done (not sure if it's supposed to). Just went into the iPod app and hit play right where I left off though.

Same things happen to me

All of the same things happen to me! When I'm browsing the internet over edge my ipod stops playing in the background, my google maps usually send me home while zooming in while in satellite mode over edge, and my regular internet browsing fails if I click too many links.

I haven't spent too much time on my wifi network at home. The way I look at it is, if I'm going to use my wifi, I mine as well just use my PowerBook.

Another problem I have with my iPhone is that my email addresses require outgoing mail be sent through my ISPs servers.... this is pretty lame for emailing on the go! I also hate not being able to save email attachments!

Finally got this to happen. While reading about Facebook on Wikipedia both Safari and the iPod app died. Clearly Steve is just setting the stage for Apple's new networking site "iSocialize" (now with iLife '08 integration!) ;-P

mine is consistent with multiple apps "open". it's definitely not EDGE net.
i've wifi'd it all over my house and in the city and it's happening over it.

same here. the iphone pix and other pix in non-iPhone emails load fine. but i got an MP3 from a friend that i wanted to listen to and it showed as a greyed out attachment. so disappointing.

This is definitely a bug as it's highly repeatable. I'm hoping it will make it into the fixes list for iPhone Software Update version 1.0.1. It would annoy me immensely except that I'm quite confident that Apple will fix it.

Use Apple Bug Reporter

Lacking an iPhone, I can't help; but someone needs to logon to the Apple Bug Reporter system and "go in the front door" on this problem. Never assume another a kind person inside or outside Apple will do it for you (although they may!). Plus, you will be able to track the bug until it's fixed.

I've had this problem a lot and so has my friend. It seems to happen to me when surfing to a page that has a lot of images (like ten decent size ones) or when the page is very long (like a big guide explaining something) or pages that are coded badly. It also happens with maps if I zoom in a lot and real fast. This has got to be some buffer or cache filling up and everything being dumped or something. I'm sure this can and will be fixed in a software update.

Thumbs up unexpected quits tip

i was having the same problem during my first few days with my pretty little device, with different programs quitting unexpectedly. i figured it had something to do with a lack of RAM, then i realized that no apps on the iPhone quit when you're done with them (they just fade into the background exactly where you left them).

long story short, that problem can be solved (most of the time, for me) by shutting down my phone, then powering it back on. it takes about 45 seconds to do, and it quits out of all the apps.

i have also realized that google maps seems to be the biggest RAM hog of them all.

hope this helped

Restore your iPhone's software. It will fix the problems you are having. If not, you have corrupted RAM.

Facebook is the majority of my reason for wanting an iPhone!

Come on, you can't possibly blame this problem on users. Apple is notorious for making horrendously RAM-heavy Applications. I have 3 GB of RAM on my powerbook, and it still pages out when I am thumbing through Aperture even a little bit. The fact that you can't quit apps in the iPhone is pretty ridiculous, and it's no surprise that the iPhone is becoming a poor performer over heavy usage across numerous applications.

Then again, these crashes may be more to do with corrupt RAM. In any case, this is not users' faults, and I think it's rather hypocritical to suggest that just because your iPhone is not giving you any trouble.
