Quicktime doesn't playback .avi files. you can get the codec, but it's a pain to install. i've tried but i've never been sucessful.
to play .avi's i use VideoLan Client (VLC). do a search on VersionTracker.com and you should see it there.
for playing .wma, .wmv files you just have to download Windows Media Player for Mac. i don't think there's any other way to view them. although if there is, feel free to correct me. 🙂

edit>> almost forgot about .rm files. there is a free download for RealOne Player for OS X. it's handy to have all the players on your comp just so you're always ready.
