Apps unexpectedly quit

I'm running Panther on a Powermac G4 733Mhz and have a couple of problems.

One, apps just end up quiting on me - Word, Safari, iTunes, you name it. I get the little message box wanting me to submit the problem.

Second, when I right click on a folder to Get Info, the box appears for about a second then goes away along with the hard drive, then re-appears after about two seconds.

I've run Repair Permissions with the Disk Utility, have all the current updates, but am not currently running any virus programs.

What gives? 😕
 
is it a clean install, or upgraded from 10.2? (highly recommend clean install)


the second problem; I think it's the finder that crashes and reboots, look in your system profiler under logs and check the error messages
 
I did a clean install of Panther. Updates were downloaded over modem.

Ugh, your getting Kernal Panics for some reason. Did you recently add any RAM? If thats not the case, I am ususally just lazy and do another clean install.

Other people might be able to troubleshoot this further, but like I said, im usually lazy 🙂
 
I haven't added any RAM. I did change out my CD-ROM for a Combo drive but had to re-install the OS (clean) to get iDVD.

I will do a clean install on the OS soon.

Has this happened to you or anyone else? I'm wondering if re-installation of the OS is common among users.

When I get unexpected quits, I always clean out the system and user cache's.

I find System Optimiser or cocktail works fine.

Hi.
I had experimented the same problem at start up the Office x (word, excel, powerpoint). The famous:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) etc....

So I try to upgrade the software to the version 10.1.6 and, voilá, It´s work. i don´t know how long it´s work but you must try.

P.D. Sorry for my english, but I don´t speak english.
 
why don't you try to install the latest OS X version, and see if the problems continue. i am saying this because you above posts state that you are running 10.3.2, when the latest version is 10.3.8. I have noticed that i haven't gotten alot of crashes since updating my version of X to 10.3.8.

just an idea.

edit: my bad didn't notice you were on dial up.
 
There's some misinformation here.. those aren't kernel panics. They are crashes. And what you posted isn't the useful part of the crashlog. The parts you omitted are the important part.

I would agree that you should upgrade to 10.3.8. But I also would like to say that Panther is SIGNIFICANTLY more RAM touchy then Jaguar was, and is much less forgiving if there is a problem with the RAM. This could easily account for your problems.

Once you get up to 10.3.8, I suggest running Memtest for a couple hours (if you can) to let it test your RAM.

No. I support Macs (~150 of them) and I rarely have to reinstall the OS.
