"Psystar slaps Apple around, releases Mac clones with Blu-ray / GeForce 9800GT"

Engadget via MacUser is reporting a new release by our friends a Psystar. Psystar's version of Mac including a Blu-ray burner and the nvidia 9800gt.

Thoughts?

Shouldn't be that hard since the 9800GT is a 8800GT. Stop tempting me Psystar...

Why are you tempted? Get OSX86 and throw your own rig together.

Why are people criticizing them when they are still paying for a copy of Leopard? They may be violating EULA, but they aren't stealing the OS from Apple.

It's good to have them around because it forces Apple to offer a comparable product rather than withholding certain releases.

Wow. They purchase the OSX copies legally. Eula's are not legally binding. Who cares. Everyone here complains about Microsofts WGA, but Apple's EULA is the same damn thing.

I'm so glad that you guys will be happy when OS X shoots up to $400. Because the current price is based on the fact that Apple gets a hardware sale out of it, you know.

If this clone deal ends up being permenant, say goodbay to $129 copies of OS X. This idea bothers me, but I guess you two will be fine.

Yup. Apple is still riding high off the money made on those old powerbooks running leopard, eh?

Isn't playback mainly what people would want Blu-Ray for?

I've said it before. Psystar would die on the vine if Apple offered hardware that the Prosumer wanted and not having such a large gap between iMac and Mac Pros.

Apple should offer something akin to Psystar at a competitive price. In 6 months, no more Psystar.

No. I don't give a crap about Hollywood movies and if I did DVD is good enough. Blu-Ray is a great data format. Maybe even a good backup format. But I think you are right most people now days use computers as media players

At nearly $20 for 25 GB of storage ($800 per TB), Blu-Ray is an extremely expensive backup media, and not a proven media at that.

I would think so, but there are many overzealous Blu-ray fans who are infatuated and obsessed with Blu-ray. I personally think it is overrated.

actually no, playback of a 1080p video with lossless sound on a 13" screen with janky speakers is pointless. Most people want Blu-ray because I can edit my content in HD but I can export in amazing 480p!

It makes editing in HD or shooting in HD on the mac side not pointless at all. Im sorry but Apple is dragging their feet on this one for no reason.

Are you telling me, every pos company can figure out how to put a Blu-ray player in their computers WITH platback but Apple who was on the Blu-ray board cannot?

How has Psystar "forced" Apple to do anything?
Has Apple changed any of its business models or introduced the mythical mid-range Mac tower?
Psystar is no threat to Apple.

They will, assuming they continue to offer things that Apple specifically does not. They're still around because they're selling machines, and offering stuff Apple won't should only increase what they can sell. I'm sure Apple foresaw this (As part of the reason to get rid of them other than brand dilution) and laid them with a suit (to begin with).

Uh, Dell sells products that Apple does not sell, but I have not seen Apple rushing to release Dell-type computers. Steve Jobs said recently that there are consumers that Apple does not cater to—that is the cheap-o/budget PC crowd. The mid-range tower from Apple is a pipe-dream.

They forced Apple to sue them (not really but i couldn't resist). either way, having another company (especialy in an "underground" kinda way) make a competing product like they are doing is actualy rather good for apple. here is why;

1. it keeps apple and OSX in the spotlight. this generates cheap press for apple, after all to mimic is the highest form of flattery.

2. it forces apple to be competitive with their hardware offerings. apple will likely sit on new features and play the safe card, but i doubt they will do it as long as they have in the past now.

3. the underground interest. this is allowing people to get into OSX without buying a mac mini (a system where apple has much less markup on). now interetsed developers can get a system and start coding who cant otherwise afford apples price tag and apple still makes money from the licence purches or OSX.

4. release hype. one of the best ways to generate hype about a product is to play leapforg with your competition. AMD and Nvidia do it all the time. companies that dont have anyone to really play leapfrog with (Microsoft) offten have to resort ot other business tactics to spur sales of there primary product (an example, just a theoretical example mind you , would be to release a stable OS then release, and force, something new that people wont like as much, then release a product to save them that is better. much like how Coke did with "new coke" and then bringing back coke clasic, its a commonly used, though not offten discussed, marketing tacktic).

I've been saying that for a VERY long time.. I paid for my OS, I paid for my hardware. I'm doing absolutely nothing wrong

As an aside, my Hacintosh is more reliable and cost less than any Apple machine I've ever owned.

Maybe I missed a keynote, but I have not seen any Apple products produced as a result of Psystar. Apple is sticking with their business models, price points, and methods of operation—Psystar is not an Apple competitor.

Yeah but these people ripped off a whole open source community, I know a lot of people think it's not stealing because they're stealing from the people that created hackintosh, but the people that coded this were doing this for non profit educational purposes. They made huge leaps and bounds on their own, we even got an EFI emulator out of it (which psystar IS using or at least at one point was) so that's the main reason why apple never went after them and in my opinion isn't going to. These slimeballs take the whole hard work of this community take the credit and make money out of it. Say what you want of the EULA bottom line what these people are doing is not right even if some want to fight they're not stealing from apple fine, but they're still stealing from somebody, regardless if the people they're stealing from have a case or not. If you want to support this buy your own rig and do it yourselves dont support these slimeballs.
