So after updating to 10.5.6, I can no longer change energy settings from the menu bar... am I alone in this or is it supposed to be that way now?

I'm still on 10.5.5 and I can't do that. I don't recall ever being able to do that.

Here's what mine looks like under 10.5.5.

Yea, you used to be able to switch between "Better Battery Life", "Normal", or "Better Performance" presets directly from the menu bar. Strange, wonder why they got rid of it.

You can still switch between the presets in the preference pane.

Perhaps Apple removed this in the late 2008 laptops. I have an aluminum MB. Never noticed this on my iBook.

i hope that's not true for 10.5.6 and that you're just missing a setting/option or something. Cause i use that all the time.

It's true. This feature has been axed for all mac laptops before late 2008 ones.

no, the feature hasn't been axed... you can technically still go into system preferences and change it... it just doesn't show up on the menu bar.

unless you meant that the ability to change it from the menu bar has been axed... in which case, nevermind

In the Late 08 models, this option was never there in the first place. In fact, those "Normal" "Higher Performance" etc, options are completely gone, and replaced by "Better Battery Life" (9400) and "Higher Performance" (9600).

That is funny you started this thread, I was just about to when I noticed the same thing. It is weird Apple took this feature out.

weird is not the term I would use. It plain sucks. I use that all the time, having to go through system preferences is a huge annoyance :(

been looking through time machine backups, no luck so far.

im on 10.5.5 and i see it

edit: i just updated to 10.5.6 and its GONE! i have the santa rosa mbp.

what a dumbass move apple.

I use that all day. I understand the new machines have to logon/logoff to get the settings to change for the cards, but give me a freakin break.

well, i can still do it in V I S T A :) haha

I don't see what did big deal is, all the "better battery life" setting did was change the amount of time before dimming/turning off the LCD, and the sleep timer. It never actually changes the CPU/GPU clock or anything like it did on the G4/G5.

This is true, it was never an option the Late 2008 models, it was removed with their special version of 10.5.5 9F2114 (which was only ever available on Late 2008 models); as an owner of previous model a previous model MacBook I found it convenient to change it in the menu bar, but it hasn't really been an issue with the new machine but I can see it bugging a lot of people.

I can imagine they made it specifically removed for the two-GPU MBP's for switching between them, but I can't imagine the other machines having to lose that functionality.

I hope it comes back, even in the new MBP it wouldn't hurt to have it.

yeah, except, I am using 10.5.6 on a 12" PowerBook (G4-1.33GHz), and the option is missing there too. So it is a big deal to me

yep

yep, same here, doesn't work.
And, my wireless seems to be weaker, I'm in the den in the AM, and my wifi is going on and off all the time.
