It's annoying that it wasn't even there on the late 2008 models...even in system preferences! I always fiddle with the dim times when I'm watching a movie or something, and it's weird that I have to click defaults to recall any previously used setting! And no, logging out is not an option when I'm streaming something from the internet that's poor quality anyway!

Why they took this off other machines that only have one GPU is just plain odd...

Morning Coffee Surprise

This is frustrating. A Two-Click process now takes 5 and apple is supposed to make things easier. I'm always switching power profiles on the go. When plugged in I don't care as it switches automatically to Better Performance but when on battery its nice to be 2 clicks away to switch between profiles.

My windows notebooks now win in this department. 10.5.6 was supposed to be a security release but now they made my non aluminum macbook an aluminum one with now unspeedy power management. Yes I hate glossy screens and 5 click power management. Thanks Steve!

My biggest grip is Apple taking away features. I used to love sending SMS from address book... years ago. Just because the sodding iPhone can't do it doesn't mean you should take it out.

I don't see what did big deal is, all the "better battery life" setting did was change the amount of time before dimming/turning off the LCD, and the sleep timer. It never actually changes the CPU/GPU clock or anything like it did on the G4/G5.

Well for my Powerbook G4 it changes speeds (dunno if GPU/ CPU or both). With max. battery settings I cant watch flash movies, with max. power settings its way better!

Apple for f*** sakes, bring back the energy saver menu preferences as they were! Some of use this daily! If I had known that you were going to fubar this menu option, I would have refrained from upgrading!

DO NOT FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKEN!!!

We should mention it to Apple. It can't be that difficult to bring back.

feedback sent...

Please bring back the Energy Saver Menu quick toggles. I switch back and forth between my custom profile and the preset profiles every single day and am very disappointed that you would eliminate this useful feature in update 10.5.6. Why would you remove this?! Makes no sense to eliminate/reduce functionality on something that was not hampering or hurting the system, and on the contrary helped in improving overall efficiency and usability. This Energy Saver Menu toggle is now more or less useless really. Please give us back the option of accessing our energy saver preferences from that menu! Thank you very much.

Maybe a widget exists than can do this? If not, would it be hard to make one? I doubt apple will bring this back now.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I believe this was removed due to the lack of power profiles on the late 2008 models and Apple wanted to unify this across their product line up. I would imagine that a widget or an AppleScript could be made to accomplish the same thing.

Never used it. If I'm going away from my laptop, I just blank out the screen (hot corner).

Others that use it (apart from G4/G5 owners) why? Just dim your display and blank it out when you are AFK.

"custom" option

I've never seen the "Custom" option on mine. What is that ?

If you change any of the specific options within the Energy Saver preference pane, then you have departed from the default settings and created a "Custom" profile. Then the "Custom" option would show up, allowing you to switch between an Apple-defined profile such as "Better Performance" and your own customized settings.

I was able to change energy settings from the menu on my old PB G4 (running 10.4) but my new MBP (late 08) has never had that ability. I assumed that it was something that went away with the switch from 10.4 to 10.5 (I am still running 10.5.5).

i change energy profiles every day so that i don't waste battery power by keeping my backlight on. i like being able to change profiles fast if i'm watching porn or other videos online. Now i can't even see which profile i am currently using without opening system preferences. A 2 click process now takes 5 clicks and more movement on the trackpad! Apple - Please fix this mistake!

Haha I never noticed it, and never really used it.... but after I saw this thread, I am bummed out; I see no reason for Apple to remove it!

They also removed the "disable trackpad when mouse is in use" option on unibody notebooks. C'mon apple. We HAD these functions on previous systems. They added additional functionality and convenience. Why get rid of them?

I'm wondering it is because you can do more than just control the mouse cursor with the new trackpad - for example, controlling Expose, or rotating pictures using the two-finger rotate gesture.

They removed the better battery life options so people would be forced to buy more batteries. :p
