I'm assuming that your Mail app is asking for your e-mail account password. If this is the case...

Go to /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access

Then, find your email account in the list and select it.

Under the "Attributes" tab, click the "Show Password" box and authenticate if necessary by typing in your User password (not your email password). A new field should appear below it. Is your email password in this field? If not, type it in.

It may also be that you are typing in the wrong password or have the wrong password stored in your Mail preferences.

I had the same problem, but I am so sorry I can't remember how I resolved it. I will think on it, but mine too was with 10.2.8 mail. I think I tinkered with the edit preferences for my account and there is an options button on the account page that opens up in the preferences box. Have you tried both your email password for .mac and your administrator password? Try setting up the account again somehow and see if it will work that way? I will work on it and see if I can remember exactly what I tried. I had a terrible time for a while, but none for over 3 or 4 months now so hand in there.
