Would it be possible to buy a 40GB AppleTV and buy another 500GB 2.5" hard drive and swap out the 40GB for the 500GB somehow? Is there an online guide?

Nope, for some dumb reason Apple decided to put old technology PATA hard drives in the ATV. Since hard drive companies dont care about making them anymore, the biggest are 320, which I think its pretty big.

Opening the atv will void your warranty. It is easier to just connect an external uSB drive if you can live with an additional box beside your aTv.

This is exactly what I did, see the following link https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/683178/

Quite a few months down the line, and my Apple TV is on constantly, has approximately 400Gb of data on it, and has never put a step wrong!! It's Brill :D
