Locked o2 iPhones officially Unlockable

My dad tested the theory for me and it works, he put my mothers Orange sim card into his iPhone and it allowed him to download the Orange Carrier file and use Orange. I doubt it will work with the likes of Vodafone yet, nor T-Mobile or 3 as those two aren't going to be official.

wow that's a pretty huge claim. I don't follow unlocking. Hope this doesn't bite you in the ass. Be carful when you sling the word "Officially" around

According to this thread it's not supposed to work until next week. If it's working for you now, then good news

What did he do to get the official unlock? ie What did he do to his phone before he put your mother's card in the phone?

I ask since that screenshot can be achieved by using Blackra1n and Blacksn0w.

No worries with asking I know it's hard to believe with blacksn0w etc, but basically you put your Orange sim card in, the sync your iPhone then update it via the update button on iTunes the simple download and update the carrier file.

Don't worry about doubting me as it's a huge claim as it is, an official unlock is odd to think about. But it's true which makes me wonder if someone can fake a legit Orange ipcc file to any network can it be installed and unlock officially (somewhat) to any network?

doesn't seem to work for activation with the orange sims as mine is stuck at slide for emergency and iTunes asks to insert a valid iphone carrier sim

Is this 'true' unlock, can I then use it anywhere in world, or will it just change the lock from O2 to Orange, then I'll still be locked to using it in UK.

it only works cause a carrier update has been sent through to support Orange UK ahead of it's launch on the 10th. It's not a universal unlock, you would need to jailbreak then unlock with blacksn0w

I have a 3gs running the semi-latest firmware, so still waiting for jailbreak/unlock to be ready.

I can confirm you can switch between orange and o2 each time requiring an update through iTunes. At work now will screen shot later.

badfoot: blackra1n jailbreaks and unlocks the latest firmware and baseband

Gav2k: did you do a fresh clean restore? (ala dfu) or was it a normal restore? if so was it done with an O2 sim to activate?

How likely is it that this state of affairs will continue? Will it be the case that we will be able to continue to do this in the future or is this a loophole that will ultimately be plugged?

Or is it likely that as new carriers sell the iPhone (Orange now and Vodafone early next year) that the iPhone is simply opened, in perpituity, to those carriers?

I wonder if that means we could create two profiles through benm.at, one for each carrier, and be able to switch SIM cards/carrier files without connecting back to iTunes?

Meh....pretty useless if you travel then...what if you want to use a 3 SIM in another country? Still pretty awesome...
