I think this sort of question should help foresee how much use video chat will be on the next iPhone.

I used it once a couple of years ago when me and a mate both got new Macs with built-in iSight cameras. I've never used it since.

Not surprisingly, I personally have no interest in having a front-facing camera on my phone.

(You should add a poll to this thread - would be interesting to see.)

Put it this way: until iChat is as reliable as Skype to video chat, no.

Obviously, Skype does things differently and the quality isn't as good — but it works, and most of the time, that's all that matters.

I use it most days for business (iChat) and for talking to my family abroad (Skype).

However, I see no reason by which I would use the facility on the iPhone.

I used it the other day when I got stuck outside my I.T. class because the lower years had exams right infront of the stairs to get to the room.
I went to a small empty classroom, fired up iChat with a mate in the class, he put the teacher on and I was set for the next two hours.
Plus, I could have my music as loud as I wanted and I didn't have to put up with the idiots.
Think I should do it more often actually...

The word you're looking for is "rarely" not "barely", but that's me. I use Skype to make calls occasionally, but I almost never use its video function. I can't remember that last time I used iChat. And no, I wouldn't use video chat on a mobile device.

I have never used the webcam on any of my MBPs or even my iMac. I even forgot the thing was there till I read this post.

I'm with Surely on this one, I use video chat to talk to family abroad. I use iChat or Skype depending on which family member has what type of account.

All the time with family.

It definitely helps when the the grandparents of my 4 month old want to check in from time to time (without driving or flying the 900 miles to see her).
