I want to build a system for video editing using FCP and DVD SP and Motion.

I know a dual processor is esential. but what actually speeds up rendering time in Final Cut? CPU or the Video Card

Same question for DVD Studio Pro and Motion.

What is a better choice for a system... asuming both have 2GB of system RAM

DP 2.5 with the ATI 9800XT video card (256mb Video Ram)
or
DP 2.0 with the Nvidea 6800 GT video card (256 ddr3 Vidoe Ram)

what helps a system preform better and does a faster CPU become overkill if you have a lower end Video card?

CPU, CPU, CPU, CPU, CPU, CPU, CPU, and CPU!!!

The video card has nothing to do with 2D or video rendering besides redrawing the screen.

What you should get is a Rendering card. It's a card that helps the CPU render stuff. Matrox used to sell one.

I have a Dual 2,0GHz, 2GB RAM, RAID, Radeon 9600 64MB, and it screams compared to my friend's Dual 1,8GHz, 1GB RAM, Stock HD, Radeon 9800XT.

In order, you need the Following:

CPU (You'll never get a CPU fast enough)
RAM (The buffer... prevents slowing down because of HD access)
RAID (Incredibly speeds up your disk access)

are you sure about that? core image is going to absolutely speed up all apps that take advantage of it. core image works best with a high end graphics card.

128 MB video card is fine. I wouldn't worry about it. Notice how the Dual 2.5 dlastmango picked out has a 256MB video card? It will be great for a while to come. It will speed up my PowerBook and that has a 64MB video card...

The extra .5 Ghz on each processor as well as the faster system bus will be the biggest help for video work, etc.

my previous post was in response to mr mac stating that the video card has nothing to do with speeding up FCP. i wasnt addressing the size of the video card.

thanks for the info though.
