This memory http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Modules-1066MHz-KTA-MB1066K2-8G/dp/B001PS9UKW should work with Macbook 5.1 A lot of people confirms that in comments. They also mention Apple updated firmware.

I will find local vendor and order them. Hope they will work.

Do you have a 2.0 or 2.4 processor in your Macbook 5.1? I know we have confirmation from someone in this thread that it worked fine on the 2.4 but I don't have a confirmation that it worked on the 2.0. I am nervous to purchase the 8GB upgrade because if it doesn't work, I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it. I want to purchase reputable RAM so that there are no issues.

The price of ram has come down a bit. I'm considering buying *gb to try but the real question is

other than a kernal panic, can having too much ram installed really damage my computer? I mean if it kernal panics i wont use the ram anymore obviously, but i read a story about someone messing up 3 mac minis from isntalling too much ram. Could It permanantly damage my comp?

Not when i'm trying to run 3 servers in VMWare for a customer demo...

Exactly! Not when your running 7 full bore and Server 08 and 03 in virtual machines and running Word and Dreamweaver, Phototshop and flash pro for homework. 4GB is so not enough. The reason I upgraded to 6GB, then 8GB eventually.

Has anyone looked at what 8 GB of laptop DDR3 costs? I'm going to be buying the new macbook and just checked - you're looking at about $700 for 8 GB memory (compared to $60 for 4 GB...). These prices are from NewEgg.

wait, what? $700 for 8GB set? Um it was $88 yesterday for my MacBook.

Does upgrading to 8gb RAM work if I'm running Leopard?

I am also curious about upgrading my aluminum unibody Macbook late-2008 model:
Apple MacBook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (13-inch DDR3) MB467LL/A

The consensus seems be that 6gb RAM is do-able for everyone with this spec, and most likely 8gb RAM too if running Snow Leopard.

I'm still running Leopard. Does that mean 6gb is max for me unless I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I don't think there is any 100% definitive answers on this, but it seems like I only starting hearing about the ability to run 8GB once Snow Leopard was released.

I'd like some confirmation on the availability of 8gb RAM on the 2.0 GHz Model.

Anyone try this yet?

Got one of my 4GB Crucial modules today. The other one is coming tomorrow. Newegg must have had an inventory issue and not had two the day i ordered. Anyhow, I'm running with 6GB now. Gonna put the other 4GB module in tomorrow and try 8GB total.

Today, I've successfully installed 8GB on:

Mac OS X 10.6.6 + Macbook 5,1

with Samsung DDR3 8500 1066MHZ 4GB*2.

At this moment, I can't find any problems.

If there is any problem, I'll post it.

I hope "No news is good news."

I can confirm that the Late 2008 5,1 13" Macbook works with 8GB of ram.

I just recently installed of Corsair CMS08GX3M2A1333C9 memory and it passed the install DVD short diagnostic test as well as general operations with flying colors.

The next day I returned that memory and purchased Crucial CT51264BC1339 memory and it not only passed the install DVD long diagnostic test but I was able to load the computer down and use all 8GB of memory and everything worked perfectly. I ended up finding the Crucial memory for $35 cheaper than the Corsair memory.

As a side not this is 1333MHz memory not the usual 1066MHz stuff. Everything does seem a bit snappier under my normal use. I usually don't use more than 2GB of memory while surfing and running iTunes and a few other programs, so I'm not sure whether the speed increase is from having more memory or because the memory is faster. Either way it feels faster and it only cost $80; just a few dollars more than buying only 4GB's.

Get 8GB's and don't look back.

Matt

MacBook 5,1 "Late 2008" works with 8GB

MacBook 13.3" 5,1 "Late 2008" (not MacBook Pro) works fine with 8GB RAM.

This means that Macsales' info here is incorrect (it says only MBP can use 8GB, MB only supports 6GB):

I now have 8GB RAM, 160GB SSD and 1TB HDD - nice! If you want to swap the DVD with a second HDD/SSD: http://automagisk.no/blog/2010/01/11/macbook-with-two-drives-160gb-ssd-640gb-hdd/

Thanks for the confirmation. I think I'll have to spring for 8gb ram eventually. That coupled with an SSD and well...

After scanning through this thread I finally made the leap to upgrade from 2gb to 8gb RAM. I have the mid-2008 aluminum unibody Macbook.

I purchased:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PS9UKW

It seems to be running without any problems! How will I know kernal panics are happening?

It has been confirmed multiple times in this thread that 8GB works on the 2.4GHz MacBook.

Nobody was able to prove this on the 2.0GHz MacBook though.

Well, I'm doing it cause I don't have the skrill to buy a new MBP? So $90 to max the ram seems like a good deal for me, it'll help with some of the VM's I run and just to have 8GB of ram.

I probably won't replace this MB for another few years, so anything I can throw at it to make it last longer seems like a good deal.
