I pulled the hard drive out of my ATV2 to give a peek at an HD rental movie. It was easy to find - within the Media partition is a Rentals folder. It was there with its actual name, not some ambiguous name that iTunes applies to sync'd videos on the ATV hard drive. Here are some of the findings, if anyone's interested.
Quicktime
Quicktime opens the file but will not play it. At the bottom right is an "Authorization needed" dialog and I'm sure there's something special about the Quicktime on the ATV2 that provides this authorization (but not QT installed on Macs). Some features about the file itself:
1. 1280 x 534 resolution
2. 23.98 frames/second
3. File size is 3.98 gb (which seems remarkably small)
4. Total bit rate is 4025 kbits/s
VLC
VLC opens the file, but of course cannot deal with the DMR. Here's its error message:
mp4: drms_init(priv) failed (could not get system key)
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `drmi'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
