Here's a thought...

Allowing anonymous edits for a single "featured" article. I tested it. I can allow a single (or a few articles) to have anonymous edit access.

Perhaps we feature an article for a week at a time... allowing all comers to edit. See how it works out.

You've got page moves disabled for anons, right? That's one of the hardest things to clean up.
