Apple Adds 20 New Flyover Locations Around the World, New Maps Info in Taiwan and Finland

Apple today added 20 new Flyover locations to Apple Maps on Mac and iOS, highlighting landmarks and features across several countries including France, Italy, Japan, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, the UK, South Africa, and the United States.

For those unfamiliar with the Flyover feature in Apple Maps, it lets users see photo-realistic 3D videos of select locations, with tools for zooming, panning, and rotating to get a closer look at notable landmarks and points of interest. Some of the locations listed may have previously been available as Flyover destinations, but were just added to Apple's list of Flyover locations.

Flyover was first introduced in 2012, but over the last four years, Apple has steadily added new Flyover locations to the Maps app. In 2015, Apple updated some major Flyover locations with real-time animated landmarks, making the Flyover experience even more immersive. Many Flyover locations have an additional City Tour feature that walks users through different landmarks in each city.

Along with new Flyover locations, the Maps app has been updated in Taiwan and Finland. In Taiwan, iOS users now have access to traffic information, and in Finland, the Nearby feature introduced in iOS 9 is now active, allowing users to get information on local businesses located near them.

I used Flyover City Tour feature a few times this evening, looking at potential places for a holiday. It's a fantastic resource for getting a spatial sense of a city/place.

Apple cannot replicate street view and I can generally live with that. But either decide fly over is valuable and spend some money to roll it out or quit it.

Did people come out with this inane stupidity when Google first revealed its satellite view? Duh, why would I need to see anything from so high up? I'm not a bird lol.

No, I don't think they did. Now we're getting a 3D satellite view which is vastly better than a flat one and suddenly an overhead view is useless. Weird.

Since Flyover arrived I use Street View about 5% as much as I used to. Its just way, way, way too slow. And I guess I'm not the only one, becuase Google are rolling out their own Flyover.

yup, it's a nice gimmick, but that's it - i'd rather see them fix apple maps bugs than adding small cities (really, we austrians got graz and salzburg, but no vienna ?) to flyover. some standard european address formats are still not working in maps (while being recognized by ios context aware functions, e.g. in mail, they produce an error, when clicked on, and then you have to re-format them and type them manually into maps) and asking siri for an address works about 1 times out of 100 - she prefers sending me to similar or not-so-similar sounding addresses in other countries.

I don't own a chopper either, but I find Flyover very useful.

Not owning a chopper is not a good predictor of how useful you will find Flyover. There has to be a better explanation why you don't find it useful. Maybe some people are better at visualizing an area when they can see what's around the corner or on the next block. Others are more oriented to seeing only what you can view from a single point.

I'd like to see them fix bugs in maps also, but I hope they wouldn't do it by grounding the pilots who collect the imagery and the 3D specialists who clean up the raw imagery. They wouldn't be very good at fixing bugs in the code, and would probably make it worse.

Heh. Paper maps tended to be just lines to represent roads. But if you actually drive on the lines in real life, you'll get a ticket or have an accident.

Middlesbrough???!!!! Could they not find a more interesting or scenic city in the UK than Middlesbrough?! The most interesting thing in Middlesbrough is Teeside Park retail estate - at least that's included in the flyover! You get a real sense of just how much car-parking there is!

I like and use both Street View and Flyover. But use them for different things.

When I'm in a new City, Flyover is great for getting a quick and dirty look around - more detailed than a flat map but way faster to navigate than Street View. It was great when I visited Rome 2 years ago - lots of winding alleys that look similar, Flyover helped a lot. Street View in this situation would be slow and annoying.

Street View is great when I have more time and want more detail. Pretty rare that I actually need it day to day but when I do it's really useful. When I bought my house I used it to check the surrounding streets.

I'm glad on iOS I have both.

I know, I'm from Newcastle, I can understand why loads of other cities around the world and even in the UK are ahead of us, but Middlesbrough? It should be one of the last places added. Can they even see anything in flyover through all the smog?
