Which building (or portion of it) are they planning on tearing down? I did a google earth walkthrough of the area and can't exactly find what they are talking about.

Not all of the buildings in that square appear to be that old.

According to Macprime, it's this one: Freie Strasse 47, Basel (Google Maps).

There is no Google Streetview, but MacPrime has some photographs of the building in their article. It looks like a building to me that was at least heavily reconstructed in the 70s or 80s, if it's much older at all. Nothing that's really worth preserving. And you can be sure: If it was, Swiss Heritage Society would intervene.

I still think of Edinburgh as a major city...
