As noted by Patently Apple, Apple has filed a new trademark application in Europe covering the term "Noteworthy", classifying the term under computer software.

The report speculates that the trademark could have something to do with optical character recognition, or even an integrated sensing display capable of acting as a scanner The usual broad range of terms covered in the classification for the trademark make it difficult to speculate on exactly what Apple intends to introduce under the new term.
Patently Apple pulls out a few interesting classifications such as "character recognition software" to feed their theory on some sort of iOS scanning app, but these classifications tend to be overly broad.

Apple's trademark application for "Noteworthy" was initially filed in November 2010 in Jamaica, a common tactic in which the company quietly files in a rather obscure country to gain priority before moving to major trademark agencies around the world.

This might seem esoteric, but if Apple ever released a music composition app for professionals, involving sheet music instead of obscure sound samples, I'd be all over it. Finale is a kludge to use, plus is still coded in Carbon/Java.

Thought it was maybe to do with the font of same name in the notes app

Isn't Noteworthy just the name of the new font in the Notes app? (as of 4.2 I think). The trademark category covers fonts, fonts are software. Reading too much into this methinks.

    Multimedia post it notes?

I'll take a random guess and suggest that they're integrating all of the different capabilities of the iPhone into one comprehensive note taking app that uses all available means to make a note of something. There's the camera, the internet, LED flash, voice recorder, and probably a few other things that could be used in note taking that haven't yet.

Maybe. Then again it would be an travel app that alerts to nearby destinations worthy of note.

Breaking news: Apple has just trademarked "almighty anticlimax" as a software descriptive term in Elbonia.
