AppleFontSmoothing - Impact Built-in Screen?

Hi Everyone -

I just got a Dell monitor and it is unusable without setting AppleFontSmoothing to 1 in Terminal. My question, however, is: does this change the Font Smoothing on the built in screen? So when I disconnect my Air, do I have to reset the AppleFontSmoothing back to original?
