What's the best way to backup the data on my ipod?

I've got a Nano (1st Gen, 4GB), so only a select portion of my library is on my ipod. I decided to manually manage the music on it (I'm a recent convert who isn't quite ready to hand it over to itunes).

Is there a way to back it up such that if there were a problem, I could restore the songs that are currently on it?

When you select the song from the library and put them onto your ipod, you could alos create a new playlist and add those same songs onto that playlist. Then, if there is a problem, just use that playlist to put the songs back on.
