I don't have Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) and would like to know if it's possible to use it for backing up a Mac Mini. The Mac Mini has two hard drives, one 120GB SSD for OS X, another 500 GB mechanical drive for data.

Currently I have a 3TB Western Digital MyBook (USB-3) holding files from the Data HD that I had copied manually and other files I don't need a backup or are duplicates.

I'd like to schedule backups from the Mac Mini (120+500 GB) into the external drive (3TB) with out having to think much.

The short answer is yes, CCC will clone the 2 drives and you can schedule automatic backups. You will need a partition on the 3TB for of 120 Gb for the Mac Mini SSD clone. You will also need a partition on the 3TB for of 500 Gb for the Home HD clone.
