I read somewhere that "iphone just draws as much current as it needs...".

But due to large wattage discrepancy I have to ask again - does that also work if you use the Macbook Pro charger (87W) and the USB-C to Lightning cable?

The charger should work on the iPhone, don't expect to see it charge fast
But if you're in a dire need for a charger it'll work

Yes it's fine. I use my charger to do exactly that.
