Defrag iPod?

well my ipod WORKS fine, but sometimes when i select a song, i actually hear this ringing noise of the hard drive sounding like its loading a song.... well then when i look at the screen, and the song is about to play, i notice the screen sorta stutters to the new song as it moves from the old one... is this to be expected? or should i look into this more :confused:

My 3rd Gen 10GB does it every now-and-then. I always just pretend it didn't happen.
 
i've heard of using a 3rd party program to defrag the iPod HD. Apple does not recommend it... but he did say that playback performance improved!
 
The pause between when you press play and when you first hear the song is when the 4200 RPM drive is spinning up so it can download the data into the iPod's buffer. It's total normal, and happens on my iPod. Defraging the hard drive is really not a good idea. But if you want to keep you iPod's hard drive as neat as possible I recommend you reinstall the iPod's OS, and then reload all you songs. Please do not run any kind of 3rd party disk defragmentors on HFS partitioned disks.

Yep, that is really the only way to defragment the iPod hard drive. You have to erase it completely (using the restore) and the reload all your music. However, I have actually heard that this can result in a performance increase. If you add and remove songs a lot from your iPod, a periodic restore couldn't hurt.
 
My ipod is cool, but does have it's quirks....

Sometimes when I select the album and hit play and it skips to the second song instead of the first.

Sometimes when listening to an album it skips past certain tracks, but when I hit back they do play.

Sometimes the volume varies even with soundcheck on.

Sometimes the left earbud gives a distorted popping sound when I'm walking.

The battery doesn't last near 8 hours anymore, maybe 6 tops... and when I'm on the highway for more than 6 hours I have to quickcharge it for an hour with my powerbook while driving to get it to last all the way to my destination...

There has always been a second delay when selecting tracks

When listening to live albums you can really notice the small gap inbetween tracks (the crowd silences for a split second)

The clock isn't always accurate...

The shuffle often has radio-like qualities by repeating the same songs...

Other than that... it's cool.

yea u just summed up all the stuff i have :eek: :rolleyes:

i guess no mp3 player is perfect, but its good enough
