DVD-R regions

Hi all.
I live in Japan, and recently bought a used G4 Powermac with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. I am about to go to New York on business soon, and while there, I thought I would pick up some DVDs. Now my question is this, Is it possible to set the drive to play both region 1 and 2 DVDs? I would appreciate a reply if anyone is in the know.

you have to firmware patch the drive, which can be risky
